Onion smell
Can anyone identify the plant that I am smelling as I drive around in my golf cart just south of 466? It is a garlic/onion smell and I think it is a grass or plant.
|
I'll bet it is wild onion. We have a lot of here down south and when someone cuts their grass you can really smell it. It loves cooler weather so we don't see it as much in the heat of the summer.
|
Either that or ........
It could either be that or the Garlic plants. (The ones with the purple flowers ). We have several around our place and love the aroma especially after a rain. Wish I knew where the "wild onion" plants were growing. I could grow some tomatoes and lettuce and have a backyard salad.

We had a garlic plants (non edible, sorry SAB) in SoCal and my ex-hubs went crazy planting them all around our house one year. The smell drove me crazy (crazier?) not in a good way, but the plant is very hardy and beautiful and I loved the purple flowers. Didn't realize they would grow here in Florida, I may try to plant some because they are pretty for sure.
SAB I already have tomato plants so come on over to Heavenly Hadley for a tomato salad!! |
I started melling that last week.... thought it has a skunky smell.
|
It is most likely the Society Hill Garlic plant you are smelling. We have them in our yard and they seem more pungent since they have been hit with cold weather.
As an aside, I own a property on Society Hill Circle in Mallory. It sounds like a pretty pretty snobby address until you realize it is named after a garlic plant...not it's residents!!;) |
Sam, in Los Angeles it was named San Bernadino Hill Garlic Plant!
Society Hill Garlic Plant is a very snobby name for a plant that stinks!! :yuck: |
I have heard that they help in keeping Mosquitoes away.

Yeah, my wife has been complaining about the "skunk" smell. I told her it's some kind of wild onion. Looks like the garlic theory is pretty good, too. The guy who does my grass said TV uses ornamental garlic in many landscape areas.
