What is you monthly water usage?

I have posted about a water leak in another thread, but just called the water company about our VERY high water usage. They said it looked like we just use a lot of water. 30,000+, almost twice what our previous home used. And homes the homes were similar. They did agree to check the meter.

I am curious. Would you mind telling me how much water you use a month?

30,000 gallons is a lot! Unless you are doing a lot of watering of your yard. We use 3000-4000 gals/mon w/o much yard watering. Now, with more watering of the yard, we are using about 10000-20000.

Starflyte1,
You do not state the size of your lot which will make a big difference in water usage. We have a 12,000+ sq. ft. lot, and are currently using over 10,000 gal, and I just adjusted the settings on our controller. I had Jim Baumgardener out and he found a broken spray head which I am sure contributed to the excessive water usage. I am hoping that this will bring the usage down to a more reasonable level.

I am watering twice a week. 4 zones, 25 minutes on 2 zones and 20 minutes on the other 2. Last month, 4400 gallons, month before when I was in residence, 7400 gallons.

We received a very high water bill this month. Our lot is about 8, 000 square feet. We are not there now and used almost 27, 000 gallons for irrigation. I don't understand how it could be so high. Our water is set to go on twice a week. We live in Dunedin and the water prices are higher.

That's a lot of water. Did you just have a big jump in water usage from last month? If so, and the frequency and length of watering hasn't changed, then you could have a leak or broken sprinkler heads.

I have a large corner lot to irrigate. I run 8 zones 3 times per week. The zones run from 25 - 45 minutes and I generally use 19,000 gallons this time of year.

Hopefully you're enjoying this extra square footage, not just your neighbors. [emoji21]

RD - I am. Our lot is encircled by an Invisible Fence so Harry can run around as he wishes. (Harry is our dog.) Our grandchildren also enjoy it.

For what its worth here's our usage since we bought our house in Spring 2015. After a couple of months our house watch provider (Jamie at Lighthouse) informed us our sprinkler controller appeared to be broken and was watering nearly every day. He arranged for it to be replaced and since then our usage has been much more reasonable. We have a medium-sized corner lot and water twice a week. We were here from October thru the end of April this year. The first number is inside usage, the second outside. There does seem to be quite an uptick in outside usage this Spring. I am presuming its because of all the dry weather.

IMO Most irrigation sprinklers heads are out of adjustment. I see some spraying driveways or streets. Most don't monitor their system and waste water letting it run down the storm drains. Water running off down the storm drain doing nothing but wasting water.

If it was me I would first see if I have any sprinklers heads out of adjustment, second I would see if any water runs down the storm drain and make adjustment in timer.

IMO If you running your irrigation system for 15 or more minutes two time week your going to us a LOT of water which IMO at least 1/3 running down the drain IMO. I walk in the mornings ever time I pass storm drain grate I hear water rushing down the line and it's not raining causing it.

IMO There is fine line between waste and excessive mowing. More you water the more it cost, the more you yard needs mowed, and in some cases causes disease.

Problem may be solved!!!

Derrick, from the water company, came out today. It was the sprinkler system timing set up. We were watering 2 times in 5 hours. So, he dropped one of those times, plus dropped the third day each week.

He figured that each time we water, we use 1900 gal. Cancelled two of those per week and figure we were using 16,000 gal of water extra! Perfect!

My fault, because we moved in in December. The house had been inspected as was the irrigation system, so, like a dunce, I did not check the system.

I should have checked the timer. Or at least insisted someone from the water company come out. It took him 10 minutes to figure it out, plus gave a lesson on the meter.

I am a bit embarrassed, because I thought I was sharper than that!
