The Villages Consumer Buying
 

Has the nationwide (global?) recession affected residents of The Villages more or less than the USA norm?

Are TV seniors more guarded of their "checking account?" Or are they less guarded because most (if not all) are on fixed incomes?

Are TV residents spending less with their discretionary income (less golf, eating out, general shopping)? Or, as I said previously, are pension incomes, social security, etc., shielding TV residents from the economic woes affecting the rest of the country?

Being on a fixed income means some kind of budget. Unless prices go up on the activities I like (golf, eating out, day trips), I still do the same things. I also budget for new electronics, clothes, etc so it is not a problem. Yet.

I think the answer to the questions are yes and no. The crowds at the restaurants are definitely down. Renters have more vacancies and rents are less expensive. All of those who I talk to are tightening their belts. Restaurants and retailers are getting real creative in their advertising. Lots of sales, buy one get one free. discount coupons, etc.
I think there may be less effect on The Villages than nation wide. With most of us retired there are fewer layoffs. I expect that goes for those who are employed. In fact, a friend who works for The Villages had her hours increased.
Lastly, the doom and gloom reporting by the media puts a damper on spending.

We all have our problems,but their is many new Villagers that have two mortgages.That sure makes you think twice about buying large items.
