GREAT Garage sales in The Villages.

We went to several garage sales this last weekend and I noticed a lot of neat things and purchased some books at a great price. HOWEVER...

I noticed a nice alarm clock at a remarkable price that wasn't selling and two lawn mowers that didn't have any interest. Anyone else find some great things or see some items that were pretty much ignored at garage sales here in TV? Have you had one? What is your best find? Any tips for people about to have a garage sale?

No tips, but a question. Did I read somewhere that all garage sales must take place in the garage?

Be Careful...

Be careful what you buy because you've already brought down too much "stuff".

GG, my best find was a bunch of beautiful pictures from Peazoup's garage sale! Now all I need is some furniture so I know where to hang the pictures.

My tip, if you're having a garage sale, is to have some Florida-style bedroom furniture for sale and call or email me first ;)

Yes, garage sales are supposed to take place in the garage according to Villages "rules". However many people also use their driveways.

Garage sales are definitely for "morning people". You have to get there early to get the good stuff.

I generally go to garage sales S of 466 (i.e. with 5 miles of my house) and do it by golf cart (much easier to navigate and park and limits how much stuff I can buy).

Tips for having one.... limit it to one day (not 2) and be done by 10 or 11 am...not much left by then anyway. Also, if you don't have much stuff, combine with a neighbor. Nothing more aggravating than parking, walking up to the garage, and find they have 4 or 5 schlocky things. Also, best approach is to have a block-wide or community wide sale. If I know there are 5 households participating on a block, I'm more likely to go than if it is just one house.

There are some great buys to be had...small appliances, light fixtures, bikes, exercise equipment, christmas trees, clothes, decor...you name it.

A Roseville Vase I purchased for $5.00 and sold it on Ebay for $107.50 two weeks later. I also purchased a small Oriental Vase at the same sale but am still researching it so I don't know the true value yet but I'm hoping it is more that the $15 I paid for it.

TV rules are that all items must be within the garage. No signs, but balloons are allowed. If you're having a sale, be prepared to have your doorbell ring two hours prior to start time. It's a fun day and you meet all kinds of really nice people. I sold a ton of stuff at give away prices only to find that same stuff in Bargains and Treasures the next day for 10 times the amount. Some people apparently make a business buying from garage sales then consigning at Bargains & Treasures. Go figure!
uujudy, so glad you like the pictures from my garage sale and glad they didn't end up in Bargains & Treasures.

Peaz. When I saw you had these lovely items for sale on TOTV, I wondered why you hadn't consigned them to Bargains and Treasures. Perhaps one of us was remiss in telling you about it?

I am now finished decorating the house we closed on in June. AS of ten minutes ago. It was so much fun. I love the thrill of the hunt!!

I have bought some beautiful silver pieces at garage sales. I look for the dirty tarnished things and usually get a good deal on it. Take it home and polish it up and I have some gorgeous pieces. I have been doing this for years and have added to my kids silver collections this way. I bought a framed painting in Milwaukee at a garage sale for $2.50 and searched the artists name on the internet and its a Dutch painter and an old old one. I had two of his paintings from that sale and gave one to my daughter who studied art and recognized his work.

I recently picked up a crystal covered cheese plate for $2 and it's real etched crystal. If you take your time and imagination with you its possible to find some real treasures.

The biggest goof I am still kicking myself over was in Milwaukee at a Goodwill store. I found an old boy doll dressed as a train engineer. It must have been in a collection cause it was immaculate. It was a brand I cant remember but a good doll maker. She wanted $4 and I tried to talk her down and the manager walked by and saw it and raised the price to $40 when she recognized the name on the neck.

I also bought a ring at a Firehouse rummage sale that needed cleaning. It is 14K gold with five rosey colored stones in a flower shape and a white stone in the center. Paid .50 for it. It turned out to be sapphires.
