Electric work quote
 

I want to have the garage lights switched out along with several other electrical jobs. I was quoted $90 each light, to remove and replace the lights on either side of the garage. I have other work to be done, but $90 to switch a light seems quite a lot to me. Is it? The other work I want to have done, along with the lights, totaled $520. I am supplying all of the lights.

It would help to have more info on the specifics of the replacement light. Are they fluorescent, LED, etc?

20min. to change the 2 garages lights. 2 screws and 3 wires ....$180 ,I think that's a lot of money,$90 would be fair. ask how much per hour???

$180 seems high to me too!!

For this kind of work a good handyman will suffice. If you are not moving wires or relocating boxes, use a handyman.

One word of caution, make sure the 'handyman' is licensed and insured. Also, to be perfectly legal, you MIGHT need a permit, depending on the work to be preformed. I have done my own work back up North and some here (retired professional electrical engineer), and I went the permit route just for the safety factor that the inspector agreed with what I had done. I have also used Lenhart's and ECI for jobs that were larger then what I wanted to get involved with or involved requirements I was not familiar with (like the 240 volt supply to a hot tube).

I recently received quotes to have a total of six fluorescent lights changed to LED lights with a significant difference in prices for the same job. These are recessed lights, requiring new ballasts and new bulbs - not new fixtures. One of the better known companies quoted me just over $500. Another was almost $300. A third, actually referred to me by Besco Lighting in Leesburg, came in at $200. If you can do a job like this yourself, great. If not, be sure to check around.

$90 a light really does seem high. I agree that a handyman is the way to go for this. Not sure what other work you want done, so it is hard to say who should do the work, but you could have an electrician do work for some of the work and a good handyman for other things.
