Apoquel versus Prednisone

I know apoquel is a non steroid and prednisone is. Do you have any experience with apoquel for skin allergies, specifically itching. About once a year my zoe goes on prednisone for this problem to relieve the itching and not get skin infections. No fleas, that we can see plus she sleeps with us so we would see them. She gets regular medicated baths, grain free food and salmon oil on her morning breakfast. Thanks for any opinions.

I cannot say enough good things about Apoquel. One of our goldens has terrible skin allergies. Not only is he on allergy vaccine shots (after years of prednisone and antibiotics to treat flareups), his derm vet gave us Apoquel. Whenever the dog starts licking, I give him one, and whatever is bothering him stops. My vet says it is so much safer than steroids, and he can take them twice a day safely for the rest of his life. We don't need them very often because of the vaccine shots, but I keep a supply on hand.

BTW, we fought these allergies for 6 years. At times he had so many hot spots and very little hair on his abdomen, and was in misery. Finally we were referred to the derm vets in Maitland (AVS). It was pricey, but I wish we had taken him there years ago. He now has a thick coat on his abdomen, only an occasional hot spot, and occasional licking, which the Apoquel relieves.

Apoquel has been a miracle for us. My poodle was on prednisone off and on and now has type 1 diabetes, and there is a correlation between prednisone and the disease. She has had every other option they could try, and the day she started apoquel the itching subsided. She takes a small dose every night and when I suspect an outbreak is coming or she starts licking her paws I add a dose - just 1, and it's under control. If we hadn't found this drug we may have had to make a decision that we didn't want to make -the discomfort was just that bad. She has relief and we have our baby!

When Crosby was on prednisone, they told us he would drink more water, pee more, and we should nail our sandwiches to the table.

So glad for you and your pup that they came up with this medicine.
