Paint disposal

How do I dispose of some leftover latex paint? It is of no use since I repainted a different color. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same problem. Awaiting response LOL

I was told to leave the can open to let it dry out, then it can be discarded with the household trash. That's if it is water based latex. Oil based paints must be disposed of through hazardous waste. Conveniently, there is a hazardous waste dropoff coming up August 20 at Lake Sumter south parking lot. There is an article about it in the POA news.

The way we had to dispose of old latex paint in our prior hometown was to mix cat litter in the can with the remaining paint, leave the lid off until the paint/litter combo dried, and then dispose of in regular trash. It can sometimes take quite a bit of cat litter if there is considerable paint left in the can.

Latex can not be disposed of with hazardous waste.

The VHA Voice in today's paper, Welcome Wednesday Recap:

Hazardous Waste & Electronics Mobile Collection, Saturday August 20, 8am-2pm, Downtown Sumter Landing South Parking Lot between Old Mill Run and Old Camp Road.

Read the page 4 recap for a list of items accepted.

The recap mentions paint but does not say oil only??

In south Fla. we had a day when we could bring in our paint and it was all mixed together and called Broward county paint and given to those that needed it. Good program. Got a lot of homes painted.

You can purchase "hardener" at Home Depot and other places if you like. As long as it is latex and a solid, it goes in normal trash. And my trash guy sure doesn't open it up to make sure. He has taken TV's that Best Buy wanted an arm and a leg to dispose of.

In my home town all paint whether dry out or not has to go to hazardous waste disposal

I read to keep stuffing the can with newspaper till the paint is absorbed then throw whole thing away in regular trash. I've done this and it worked fine with half a can of leftover paint.

Good place to empty your paper shredder. Makes your shredded documents more secure and keeps paint from getting into the ground.
