Moving refrigerator
 

We just got home from vacation and found our compressor died on our 11year old get. We have purchased a new refrigerator and before delivery I want to move it to clean under it. I'm concerned about the water line to the icemaker and how to do this without a flood. I would assume I need to turn off the water before I start but can't leave it off.

Any suggestions?

There is (or should be) a valve behind the refrigerator. Also, the water line is long enough for the refrigerator to be pulled out. So all you need to do is pull out the refrigerator out (use a rope behind it if you cannot get a good grip). Go slowly, as you get the back beyond the cabinets, you will be able to see how much slack there is in the water line and the electrical line. Pull out enough the disconnect these. If I recall correctly, you will need to either turn the water valve or push it in to turn the water off. Then clean. When the new one arrives, have the installer make these connections (use a NEW water line), and have them check for leaks.

Thanx VT. Will give it a shot. I would assume the delivery people from Best Buy would be able to do this also if we can't do it.

Please follow vt's advice and have them change out the supply line. I changed out all the supply lines in my 12 year old home. It's much cheaper than cleaning up a flooded house.

I checked the water line and it's silver metal. Best Buy was going to replace the line if it needed it but I think that its OK. My one concern now is that the refrigerator is 33" and the door is 32". I think that in that case they would have to tilt the refrigerator and enter the door at an angle which I think that would work. I had a friend who told me that they can remove the doors but don't know if that's possible.

Actually my 2nd concern is which foods to throw out. Of course we got rid of all the melted frozen stuff and other melted things. I'm not too sure whether we need to get rid of things such as ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce preserves etc. Of course we could throw out everything to be safe and start over but I hate to throw good food away.

It's best to throw away a few dollars worth of condiments than to get sick. If in doubt, throw it away. It probably says "refrigerate after opening" for a good reason and not worth the chance. I've done it many times after losing power after hurricanes in south Florida.
