Dell Computer

Disk runs at 100% most of the time slowing things to a crawl. Did virus and malware scans. checked disk for errors. All clean. Any suggestions? Thanks

1. Thrashing (Thrashing (computer science - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia))
2. Failing hard drive (caused by gradually failing areas of the hard drive requiring repeated read attempts before successful access)

Replacing the hard drive is not a really expensive project

I use System Mechanic when my computer is acting up.

What we have here is a desperate need to do a Defragmentation and clear the disk of any unused files your holding onto. It can be saved.

You didn't say how old it is, what operating system you are using, laptop or desk, chip set, how much memory.

All these affect how a computer runs. Over time, MS adds enough changes to slow down a computer.

If you are running before anything Windows 7 or your computer is over 5 years old, then you have gotten you moneys worth.

I know it you think that a computer should last longer than 5 years, and they do. But it depends what you are willing to put up with.

Sounds like defrag time.

Just a suggestion, make sure you do a complete backup of all of your important files. I would also do a windows rescue disk. While I agree that replacing a hard drive is fairly easy, getting all of the software back on it in the right locations, etc., can be interesting. There are several people in the computer club that provide this type of assistance. You might be best to contact them through the computer club. They should be able to give you an assessment before you spend a lot of money where you do not need to.
