Can you register a vehicle in FL if you own a home here, but are not a FL resident?
 

Have any of you run into this issue? We are residents of VT and own a home here. We've decided we'd like to buy a car here to leave here for use when we are down, but don't want to drive it to VT for registration. Have any of you run into this here? Are you required to have a FL license to register a car here?

Last spring we purchased a "Florida car" for DW. We are still residents of VA. Only extra hop was that you must have a FL insurance policy to register in FL. Besides that it was simple.

Yes, in fact I think that is exactly what you are supposed to do if it is garaged here, but I am guessing. If you were a Brit and had a car here, you would obviously not have British plates on it. As mentioned, just be sure to have Florida insurance and you are good to go. Looking at the Vermont rules, it seems that a used car requires a VIN verification and would necessitate the car being in VT for that step. However a new car does not require a verification and could be registered long distance. So if it is ok to not license the car in Florida, a new car would easier to register.

We bought a car here and registered it with Florida plates. Just needed insurance for it down here, which we got same agency as Fla house insurance. Our main residence is CT. The car place basically did the registration for us, can't get simpler than that! Good luck.

Essentially you have to insure the car in the state it is going to reside in. So, this will be a totally separate auto insurance policy than the one you have in VT.

Correct. I own homes and register vehicles in two separate states, insuring each vehicle under a policy issued in the state in which it is located.

I would change reside in to the state the car is garaged in for over 1/2 the year.

Hi, we are British & have owned a home & car in the Villages for past 17yrs. Initially we had to have a Florida licence to get insurance as we did not have a US driving record but a few years ago we were able to obtain Florida insurance on our British licence from State Farm in Wildwood. It was a little more expensive but meant that we did not have to renew our licence twice a year as this was tied to the I 94 immigration permit which meant each time we left, the licence became invalid & on returning 3 months later we were in default so had to pay $15 each plus the cost of renewing both of our licences Almost $300 a year in total; but it was the inconvenience of having to go immediately to the Driving Licence centre to wait (sometimes for hours) for a slot. It was difficult as we had hire car until such time as we had renewed . Hope you will be as happy as we are in Tamarind Grove.
