Weather Vanes - Are they allowed?

We already have our home purchased, but have not yet moved in full time. One of the items we would like to bring with us is a very nice copper eagle weather vane. It has been mounted on our current home for many years and is an art object, as well as a weather vane. It would fit in very well with the locale of the home, being on a protected environmental area. Will we need to get permission to have it mounted on our TV home roof when we move? Also, I wonder if anyone knows if a copper weather vane, properly rigged and grounded, could serve as a lightning rod to divert the infamous Florida lightning away from more delicate potential targets.

Hi Snok,

The answer on the weather vanes may not be so simple. Generally you would need permission for the Architectural Board - but what is and is not allowed may vary by Village. If you plan to have it installed by a contractor, they would generally take care of the paperwork for you.

I'm not so sure about the lightning. Hopefully Handieman is following this thread and can give you more info...

Not sure but:
I doubt that there allowed, however apply through the arch. board and get it officially

I think it would depend on the size and location on the home. Lightning will be the big issue and if you get approval proper grounding will a must. Bottom line be with the arch. board.

I have never seen a weather vane in TV.

I have not been to many of the Villages though north of US 27/441 except to the Paradise Lake Dog Park and the Paradise Recreation Center area.

There are several Premier models

that offer the option of a weather vane placement.
It is sort of like flag poles...are allowed...some say/argue approval is required and some say leave it to the contractor doing the work. It has been found that some do and some say they do and don't....do the work/install and nothing is ever heard about it. I guess one has done what is right from their part if delegated to the contractor.
I don't know enough, for certain, to comment on the lightning aspect.

See above (tree removal) .....

Look at your deed and see who owns the house. If the deed says archetectural board you're out of luck. On the other hand, if you own the house, then you only have to worry about yard nazis.

Fences?

No fences.

I noticed a 2 foot or so weather vane here in Lynnhaven.

It is on a lower part of the house though at the top of the garage. They seem to have some lightning rods at the higher part of the house. All of this is barely noticeable.

I drive by this house almost every day on the way to Doggie Doo Run Run and had not really noticed it before.

Hi Snok,

Perhaps you can use it as an art object? I love classic weather vanes. It would look good on a high dresser, armoire, entertainment center, etc. or out on your lanai. Bring it with you!

I think that is a great idea Kate!. You should bring it along with you Snok if it has special memories to you. I love weather vanes also!
Whoever buys my house, will make out big time as I have alot of heavy cedar outside furniture, many big ceramic pots and stone statues. I will definitely try to sell it, but if I dont....I know I cant take it to TV with me :cryin2:, but thats okie, in the long run it will be worth it, to move to TV! :pepper2:
Ooops sorry...I guess I went off topic . Good luck to you on your move! :beer3:

You can use it as an ART object if you like but what if ART doesn't like it then there goes the neighborhood .....
