White flight is creating a separate and unequal system of higher education

White flight is creating a separate and unequal system of higher education - The Washington Post

What a stupid and worthless story...it ignores the REAL reasons minorities don't do as well.

"In the post-World War II era, whites fled the center city to the leafy-green suburbs and better neighborhood schools. Today, a similar trend has taken root in American higher education, only this time whites are fleeing the underfunded and overcrowded two-year and four-year open-access colleges for the nation’s top 500 universities."

ANYTHING to get away from them!

"Meanwhile, as blacks and Latinos have swarmed the halls of open-access colleges, whites have fled them."

"82 percent of students at top universities graduate, compared to 49 percent of students at open-access colleges."

MOST of those graduates are white. 80% of blacks fail the graduate.

"Blacks and Latinos graduate at a 73 percent rate at the more academically rigorous top 500 universities compared to a 40 percent rate at open-access colleges"

So blacks DO graduate at lower rates than white...no matter which school they attend. They also choose EASIER, non STEM courses.

"So, what can be done? First, we must also acknowledge the inherent limits of affirmative action as we know it. The racial stratification of higher education is a systemic problem. It will not be solved by opening up a few more seats at the top few dozen colleges. The small share of blacks and Latinos who beat the odds and get into the best colleges are proof that, in the end, it’s the odds that count. Racial disadvantage, like racial privilege, comes from a complex network of mutually reinforcing economic and educational mechanisms that serve as systemic obstacles to racial justice. These economic and educational mechanisms are generally colorblind in theory but not in fact."

What we REALLY need to do is admit that genetically we're very different. Would you expect Coco the gorilla to do well in college? Why? Because genetically...she's NOT us.

"Systemic obstacles require systemic responses. We can start thinking systemically by moving away from the current test-crazed admissions competition for seats at our top colleges. Test scores are the crucial factor in admissions decisions at selective colleges, but they explain less than half the difference in graduation rates among students. Yet, test scores enable selective institutions to dodge racial justice behind a superficial shield of institutional quality."

They CAN'T compete on a level playing field...so lets ELIMINATE testing so they don't look so bad and we can get them through.

"A student who gets an average score on the SAT would have an 80 percent chance of graduating from college but has almost no chance of getting into a top university."

Why SHOULD someone with AVERAGE scores get into a TOP school? Again...minorities want to be GIVEN things they "don't deserve".

"Happily, we have seen a large increase in access to postsecondary education for black and Latino students, but access to a separate and unequal system is no gift. The measure of college success that matters is not access, it’s outcomes, including labor market outcomes. The current system creates more dropouts than graduates among black and Latino students. If we would give those students access to selective colleges or the kinds of resources those colleges provide, their graduation rates would almost double. That’s an outcome we can all live with."

So the answer is LOWER the "standards" even more so minorities CAN pass?

What a whiny, pu$$y...

Hey minorities...want to succeed like the white people? Become smarter and more ambitious, quit WAITING for someone else to "help" you and start helping yourself.

Want to help your species? Convince 90% of your fellow minorities to stop breeding. Only the top should be having kids. The way it is now...the dregs, the sub 80 IQs are having all the kids. It's taking down EVERYTHING...education, standard of living, industry...we're required to carry 20% dead wood and it's slowly destroying the country.

If Hitler only had a son... Really I agree with most everything You post.. You must not have had a sheltered from reality life nor an indoctrination
but an education instead...

The facts are the facts.

All one need do is follow/investigate the dumbing down of America up to and including eliminating testing to that most certainly demonstrates those who, like it or not, are not able to cut it.

There is no need to lower the bar to create equality. Here is a novel idea; how about increasing the education of those who have such aspirations.

If they (anyone) are not willing to put in the effort, they do not get in. Success is not a hand out.

I have an idea. Let's bus the minority kids from the inner cities to the better schools and bus the white kids to the inner city schools. That worked out well in Boston in the seventies.

Who cares?

The result was a tremendous exit from the city schools to the suburbs and to private schools. The result was the city schools lost their better students.

While I did vote for TRUMP the proposed charter schools will result in the good students leaving the mass schools.

THE FACT IS, that our STANDARDS for educational achievement have fallen from a peak in 1968.

SOLUTION, unfortunately there is no easy POLITICALLY CORRECT ONE. Our competitors spend half what we do per student and our students are in the lower third in terms of achievement. THERE IS NO QUESTION WE ARE NOT GETTING THE RESULTS WE SHOULD FOR THE MONEY WE SPEND.

We should not be looking for a PC solution. We should be looking for a solution that solves the problem.
Political correctness is what has created and fostered the problems.

Our competitors have a significant advantage. Their decision making on what, where, when, who, why or why not is not intimidated by the crippling aversion we have become a slave to....political correctness.

We need to get back to getting the facts as best as can be aggregated. Consult; discuss; conclude; decide; move on with doing what is right to accomplish the task and do what is right.

There will always be those who will be against what is decided. Or those who are offended by what is said or done or not done. It is time to make them aware that their minority position is duly noted as we move forward with the decisions that are for the good of the majority of American and America.

Until that happens we will continue to be an also ran.
We will continue to be out paced by all our competitors and world leaders who will in fact continue to take advantage of the weakness we have.....PC!

Magnet and Charter schools are a great idea, that works in favor of the more motivated children. These children deserve better schooling and should not be held back to the standards of the less motivated or the learning handicapped. Actually, separating the less motivated or learning impaired allows the teacher of those children that are slower to spend more time at the pace needed to teach those children. When smarter/motivated children are forced to slow down for others, they become bored and prone to find other means to focus upon that might not be related to learning. For those that question separating the smarter children from the others, that's what a progressive grade step system is all about, K-12. And that is what college is supposed to be all about. So segregation by education level has been instituted for many decades and several generations. It has nothing to do with ethnicity or racial bias. It has all to do with learning ability level. If you want smarter children and adults, then it is better to separate the motivated from the less motivated or their ability from those of lesser ability. It has nothing to do with PC or bias. It has to do with what is better for our children.

It ENDS up being "racist" because the whites and asians dominate. The minorities are left behind because they CAN'T keep up.

Why do you think the standards are so low? So minorities can "succeed".

The purpose is NOT being racist. If it separates races, which it won't unless their motivation is lacking, then it may have the appearance of being racist. Appearance does not necessarily indicate real bias.

It WILL separate the races...it ALWAYS does. Whenever you "level the playing field", whites and asians dominate. It's genetic ability...motivation too...but Coco the gorilla will NEVER "qualify" to go to Harvard...it would...like the blacks..require a quota to get in.

We're NOT the same.

Yes, that was sarcasm.

Just as I predicted, the previously closet racists...are now starting to ooze out of the woodwork.

And Rubicon was ignorant enough to try and tell me...that DB was the only one here. :ohdear:

Nonsense

Nonsense----you have no facts. Your last sentence is correct.
