St Lukes and eye surgery??
 

has anyone been to St Lukes for eye surgery? i have developed cataracts but the problem is i have a history of detached retinas. The Dr here says i'm higher risk for detachments again when cataracts are done. i think i heard they are the best for eye doctors? anyone know thanks cc

Your question, I realize, is about a specific practice there and I am not in Florida at this time. Ironically though, I was just sitting here researching cataract surgery and detached retina risk.

I would see a retina specialist first so that he can assess the condition of the retinas at this point. Even though vitreous/retina specialists do not usually do cataract surgery, I would think they would know who the best cataract docs are. You may want to find out if there is a corneal specialist who can do the surgery if that appears to be a better choice for you than a general ophthalmologist. A retina doc should be able to give you some answers. I guess it's kind of like working backward, but I would start with the retina doc and pick his brain.

Cataract surgery seems quite commonplace, I know, but when there are other eye problems, I agree that you have to be especially careful when you pick your docs because you present an increased risk. I wish you the best as you go through this process.

I met acquaintances after he had surgery for a detached retina there and could not say enough good about the procedure and the care that he received. I was looking at cataract surgery (after having lasix surgery; which complicates the issue) and researched on line. I ultimately did not got there because of the distance and preliminary tests had already started at an office in TV, Good luck. Sweetthang

What you are describing happened to me. I had cataract surgery on my right eye in the early 80's; implants were not a common practice at that time at least in North Carolina where I had the surgery performed. My eye Doctor insisted that my best bet was a "hard " contact lens. Could not wear it; scratched and irritated the eye terribly. Found another doctor to do the implant and no further problems for a couple years. One morning on the way to work, I took a sneezing spell and tore and detached the retina.Not knowing what was wrong, I delayed seeing my doctor. When I did, it was too late. Many surgeries later, I have very little vision in that eye. Do your research and good luck.
