Can you fly a drone in The Villages

My hubby got a small drone for Christmas and we didn't know if he would be permitted to fly it in our yard/street. Does anyone have experience with this?
He would be flying it just to practice controlling it.
Thanks!

Probably the best answer would come from your county sheriff. But if illegal, a lot of boys (of all ages) are going to be seriously disappointed.

I think he has to register it wit the FAA. I think this is just a formality but do a search on this. I do not think manufactures have to notify you of this law until 2018.

You also would want to check and see if your community requires liability insurance. In general I think a number of serious flyers belong to the AMA and that provides liability insurance.

Does it have a camera that broadcasts? Then you might also need a Ham Technical license. Lets see what more knowledgably flyers can tell us. I do not fly drones but think it would be fun.

You definitely have to register with the FAA BEFORE you fly.

His drone weighs under the limit set by the FAA and he does not plan to fly it above 400 feet (unless by a crazy accident!). The FAA rule is for drones over 1/2 pound, his is under.

I know that there are drones that fly in The Villages because real estate agents use them to get pictures of homes for the multi-list.

I was just wondering for a recreational user.........

Thanks for the advice.

RC Flyers meet every morning at the Polo Field, most probably go around 8 to 9 AM.
The RC Flyers club will know all the rules and regulations.
The Polo Field club is his best source of information and a place to safely practice.

you definitely want an open area to fly it....wind in the afternoon is a big factor also... I took my grandson over by the polo fields to practice...

Be careful though. It can be addictive. :evil6:
Fireboy started with one small plane. We now have 19 planes decorating our garage.
