Robo Calls
I was going to add this to the thread on the Grandparents Scam but it really deserves a separate thread.
We all get those robocalls and they are annoying. Yes, if you look at Caller ID and don't recognize the number you don't answer - but the phone continues to ring. A person told me of a FREE service called "nomorobo". I checked it out and it is compatible with Comcast - my landline. I installed it and it works like a charm. When a robocall comes in, the phone will only ring one time and then automatically disconnect the call. It does not affect "real" calls and is 100% free. Their website and installation information is at nomorobo.com. No, I am not a representative of the company. I like the service and thought I would pass it on to fellow Villagers. |
I posted about nomorobo awhile back and several people panned the service for their own reasons.
I love it and find it very helpful not to have to get up as telemarketing calls get cut off, after the first ring. If it goes to two rings then I feel compelled to answer the phone, as it is a real call. Works for me and I have CenturyLink. |
Let me add a suggestion for cell phones. Mr. Number is a free spam blocker app that works on Android phones and iPhones. I have been using it for a couple years and love it.

I looked at the web site and it says that it works with "VoIP Landlines." I have a copper landline. Thanks anyway.

A few months ago I started just answering the phone and not saying anything. I think it confuses the robot and it disconnects. Anyway, my robo calls have almost stopped. When it is a real person, they will say hello then I decide if I want to talk to them.

I get these and when the long pause happens, I hold down on any button on the key pad, this produces a loud continuous annoying noise which continues as long as you hold down the button. When the 'live operator' gets on the line they quickly hang up.
I recently got a call from a marketer saying 'this is your credit card service and we wish to make you aware of a better rate for your card". I asked why they were calling me when my number is on the 'do not call list'. Their answer was 'well as your bank we are exempt from that requirement. So I asked 'well what bank are you?' and they immediately hung up. |
We have NoMoRobo and it works beautifully! The phone only rings once and then stops...it's great...and it's free for landlines!! Now we're not bothered by those annoying calls. Wish it was free for cell phones :(
