Garage Doors
 

Pet peeve of mine - open garage doors. I really don't want to look at all that junk you have saved over the years. If you have any good stuff it's like putting it on display for thieves.

People do have to use their garage as intended...utilitarian....
 

and not remain closed. It is easy for those who don't like them open....don't look....my door is up when I am working in it or in the yard.

Maybe I should have been a little clearer - I know garage doors are open when people are in the yard, working in the garage, etc. - mine is open frequently for those reasons.

But - I see some that are open from sunrise to sunset with no one in sight. Reason? Probably to keep the garage cooler. Reality - we've had recent thefts in The Villages - do people even lock the inner door when the garage is open?

I only leave my door open when I'm KLEENIN MY GUNS!!!

When I first moved here I was adamantly in favor of leaving the garage door down 'cuz it does look so much neater and better sets off the lines of the home. But after a month or so, I really began to miss using my car and golf cart, remembered they were in the garage, and realized I'd have to open the door to get them out. Another good intention down the drain..

Open to keep the garage cool especially in the heat of the summer..BTW "NEAT" is a subjective term (as in the eye of the beholder) and would most likely not be an acceptable category for a questionaire

Try Screening
 

We have the solar coated retractable screen on ours and love it! You can only see in if you walk up to the screen (which just any and everybody has no business doing), and with it down our garage is a good 25+ degrees cooler since we have a west front. There is a lockout switch for the outside control and I always keep the deadbolt on on the door into the laundry room from the garage. We simply retract the screen when it is not needed or when it rains and at night. The screen keeps the little "animals" (bugs, lizards, etc.) out, too. My cat loves to sit out there and watch the wildlife and the dog can go out and watch for the "master" to return.

Not to hijack the subject, but approximately what is the cost range for the garage door screen?

Michele's Hide-Away Screens out of Ocala did ours. With the lockout switch and the 2 remote controls, right at $16-1800. I can look it up if you'd like. We opted for the retractable because it is out of the wind/hail, etc. when not in use and you don't have to get in and out of your vehicle to open/close it. You do, however, have to remember to retract it before backing out. Hubby has backed into ours a couple of times (thank goodness it was him and not me!). I gotta tell you, that is one tough screen, too. Both times it pulled the frame out and bent it all to you-know-what, but the screen stayed intact. Not much cost involved to fix....just a pain getting it out of the way until repairs could be made. Thank goodness for great neighbors!

Michele's does a nice job and that alternative does help keep the garage cool and offers privacy.

I would have voted if there was a "Who cares?" category.

A bit of paranoia setting in, hmmmmmmm? My Grandparents and my parents ALWAYS kept their garage doors open. And they both lived in a pretty rough neighborhood.

The theory is/was this. If you got nothing of value, why do you need to lock it up? Whoever is up first, opens the garage door in the morning when getting the paper and we close it when we go to bed, except of course if we are both going to be gone at the same time.
