a/c 10 year warranty

We are trying to decide if we should buy the 10 year warranty on the air conditioner. It is over $800 and you still have to pay for your annual service with the contractor. As a rule, I don't buy the extended warranties on products except for old Sears when they included the maintenance of the product (lawn mowers - blade sharpening, etc.) Does anyone have any insight on this?

I'd like to know, also. There seem to be several loopholes in the coverage that could work to the manufacturer's benefit. Would hate to pay all that money and not be able to use it in case of a failure.

Extended warranties are a form of insurance. The companies selling it make a profit by charging more than the probability that you will need it. As with all insurance, you buy it if the potential loss that you might incur is significantly more than you can afford.

It also might be worthwhile to shop around. The company that installed our system wanted over $800 for the 10 yr warranty but I had heard Munns charged $600 so I switched to them (this is about 2.5 years ago). It's all the same Trane manufacturer's warranty. (this is for back in the day when they installed gas furnace and elec A/C - both Trane products).

I haven't had to use warranty services yet and do get the once a year preventive service call (not a bad idea anyway). I, too, rarely buy extended warranties, but, with how much we use A/C, it seemed like a reasonable deal and peace of mind.

there have been other threads on this topic try search, as i recall it is a yes you should have this because it is a very expensive replacement or repair & this is Florida. As to the cost of the contract I personally can't answer, but i recall this was all covered in other threads.

The previous owners of our home took out the warranty from Munns and I'm glad they did. We have twice had warranty issues that were taken care of at no cost to us. I normally don't buy that protection on anything but in this cast I would consider it again if we bought another home.
