His voice, demeanor and words will always be remembered.

I can see the old black & white, round screen, Olympic TV with rabbit ears antenna now. My dad would yell at us to not change the channels so often as it would wear out the contacts on the tuner.

I finally agree with you two, RIP Walter. I remember I was a junior in high school when John Kennedy was assassinated and watching him guide us all through the traumatic event. I heard he was forced to retire at 65 way back when - what a shame. He was such an icon and could have gone on for many years after that. He will be missed.

As an avid sailor he would spend alot of time on his boat called Assignment. In his later years his time away from the anchor was increased do to the network breaking in new people for a future replacements.
The inside joke was when they started the show every night they would say the he was on assignment. People thought he was working when actually he was relaxing on his sailboat. RIP

I used to attend the annual Christmas program at Walt Disney World. One year, probably about 1988, '89 or '90, we were seated so far back the stage was only a rumor.

It was common then that the Disney folk would keep secret the identity of who would be selected to read the Christmas story from the Bible.

The lights dimmed and a spotlight shone on the lectern. We heard a round of applause from those who could see who was standing there, but to us it was still a mystery.

Then, with the first words spoken, I leaned over to my companion and said "I think everyone knows the world's most famous voice." Walter Cronkite was the night's speaker.

And that's the way it was.

I know I will be crucified, but I don't remember Cronkite as being unbiased. Many of my friends, who served in the Viet Nam War, don't have good things to say about him.

No, you should not be crucified. It is very hard to be on the camera every night and hide your contempt for something. By the way Sally Jo, I served in Viet Nam and I would probably get along fine with your friends.:wave:

The disagreement over the Viet Nam War was much more widespread and deeper than now with the Iraq/Afghanistan wars.

To get a better understanding of the Viet Nam war and it's reporting, The Big Story written by Peter Braestrup, could have you looking back in history with a new perspective. The reporting on Tet '68 was particularly disturbing.
Perhaps if we had the sophisticated means of today's reportingback in the 60's, the war would have ended very differently, indeed.
