Recycling Bags
Can anyone tell me why the bags used for recycling must be 'Glad’s Tall Kitchen Recycling 13-gallon Handle-Tie Clear Bags, with a UPC code of 1258770038'? By limiting the bags to a specific package size of 12 bags from a single manufacturer, Clorox - The Villages appears to have struck a somewhat questionable deal that benefits Clorox, while requiring the Residents to pay twenty-two cents per bag. Similar white Glad trash bags can be purchased for under two cents per bag. Sam's has 13 gallon bags for even less. Why be this limiting?

Sounds like a Village Green question since they were the group that forced us into this.

I don't think they have to be Glad's recycle bag - they were recommended in the original press articles and local merchants stocked up and marked up the Glad bags. They've made it convenient for us to purchase those bags. I have looked for generics with no success although I am sure they are out there. (Just not marketed locally because the golden goose - aka TV - laid the golden egg when they mentioned the Glad bags in all the press releases, and encouraged Publix, etc. to stock up.)
If anyone knows of a 13 gallon clear bag alternative I will be in line to buy it. |
We have been using the ones from Costco... picked up every week.
|
We use a generic clear bag, not sure what size although are probably close to 13 gallon, never had a problem.....GN

We use ones we bought from Sam's Club very cheap--don't remember the brand since the box with the lifetime supply in it is stored in the attic. They are always picked up. If we have large cardboard to get rid of, it is knocked down and wrapped in clear plastic, and always picked up as well.
Since the clear bags from Sam's were so cheap, my husband thought we could put garbage in them on nonrecycle day and it would be picked up. Not so. After he chased after the garbage truck one day when they didn't pick up the garbage, the garbage man said it doesn't matter what color bag your garbage is in, it just can't be clear. |
We use generic and purchase them either at Sweet Bay or Walmart.

Thanks to All
The input is appreciated. As usual in TV, people are willing to step up and help.

Since the recycling people ...........
Since the recycling people won't give us bags to use, we don't. They're getting it both ways, they won't pay for the bags (we're supposed to). But they take in all the money for the work YOU do when you split things up.
Hmmmmmm......... seems if they want us to recycle so badly, they'd give us the bags. |
I found you don't have to split anything up. It doesn't say you have to in the recycling guide. I put my papers and bottles and cans co-mingled in a generic clear bag and they take it every time. Why waste bags separating?

:agree: I agree, why make "mount trashmore" any higher than necessary when we can all help by recycling. I'm amazed at the quantity of recyclables compared to the small amount of garbage on dual pick up days.
|
You pay for "trash bags" for trash--why not buy "recycling clear bags" for the recycling. In the end I am sure you are using the same number of bags and the cost is probably the same. We buy our clear bags from Sam's--cheaper than Glad--no problem with pick-up. Have a large trash can in garage with clear bag in it--all recycling goes in there--we don't separate items. This is the least that we can do to help with environmental issues.

Thanks to all for recommending alternatives. Everytime I bought bags at Publix I felt I was getting ripped off. I found some very inexpensive bags at Walmart - about the same as regular trash bags. Not having to sort is a big plus - had to do that in a previous location, 3 tubs to deal with. Before recycle I would put out about 5 bags of trash a week, now it is 3 recycle and 2 trash. Same number of bags and hopefully doing the environment some good.

Recycling Bags
We purchased our recycle bags from Sams. About 1 years worth for $13.00
As long as the bags are clear, thats all you need. |
