New development coming

BY DAVE BALINGER APRIL 1, 2017
Confidential sources have reported that another major development is on the drawing boards for Sumter County, near the Florida Turnpike. A 6,500 acre acquisition by a developer, as yet unnamed, has been presented to the planning board of Wildwood.
The plan calls for a mixed use project which would include at least 18,000 homes, two championship golf courses, three recreation centers, neighborhood pools, plus a town square with an old south theme. The confidential source stated that the theme would be called “Old Dixie”, and would be patterned after the style of the anti-bellum south.
The main recreation center would be constructed to resemble the Tara plantation house from Gone with the Wind. There will be various house styles and sizes available from small “Shanty” style homes, up to large high end “Planter” homes.
The planned town square would be called “Dixie Land”, and would feature buildings typical of the style of the old south. There will be an old south restaurant featuring food from the old south such as cornbread, ham, fried chicken, cat fish, greens, etc. There will be a large dinner/show club called “The Cotton Gin”. Waitresses will wear hoop shirts in the southern style of the period. Patrons can enjoy Mint Juleps on The Veranda.
Nightly entertainment will be provided at the square from the porch of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. Various statues memorializing the fallen heroes of the great conflict will be throughout the grounds. Green spaces surrounding the grounds will be planted with sugar cane and cotton.
The names used for the various neighborhoods, golf courses, home styles, and street names will be well-known names from the period such as Antietam, Bull Run, Vicksburg, Atlanta, Richmond, Lee, Jackson, Davis, Hood, etc.
The official announcement date which has not been set will depend on when the Wildwood planning board gives the final approval. Construction may begin as early as this July.

Village name change

In keeping with the southern theme, better clue in The Villages to rename their one village Manassas; only a Yankee would call the place Bull Run!
