Oil Change - Beware of Upselling
 

Need an oil change? Beware of "upselling" at Havoline Xpress Lube, which has 2 locations on 441: one near 42 and one near 466. We have had experiences at both with them trying to sell us unnecessary services. When my husband first went to the one near 42, they told him he needed a new serpentine belt; when he informed them it only had 10K miles on it, they declared it to be a cheap belt. (It is not.) The next time, the guy remarked that there was a note on their computer about it but he could see nothing wrong with it (at least one honest guy working there).

When I recently went to the station near 466 for the second time, they pushed hard to get me to upgrade to synthetic oil (which would nearly double the price), proclaiming the standard stuff they used was of poor quality... so I asked why they are using it if that's the case? No answer... I checked my maintenance book and the standard weight is listed as just fine and has worked fine for my vehicle thus far.

I won't be going back there. I have gone to other places locally without them trying to sell me something "better" when it's not needed. They are fairly fast and it's usually easy and quick to get in there, and the price is decent - so long as you don't get talked into what you don't need. Buyer beware of the upsell!

And then there is the iron filing trick on a cardboard square demonstrating to you that the rear end is an endangered species.
