Love bugs?

Hi, I am seeing a few love bugs on my front porch.

This is my first year here in The Villages.

Are other people seeing them? How long do they stay here? Anything else I should know?

Thanks!

Yes, saw a few yesterday. Harmless, but messy.

Not a whole lot you can do about those little buggers! They fly around and sometimes right into you. During the past few years, the numbers have been down. They only last a few weeks and the northern part of The Villages seem to have more than the south end.
They are harmless but you should remove dried love bugs on your car, as they can be harmful to your paint.

I wrote a Quiz about Love Bugs a few years ago. Just got 10/10 but then again I wrote it around October 2013.

As OCsun stated, they've been down the last couple of years. They are attracted to white, I remember last year only really noticeable times was when I went to the neighborhood pool. They seem attracked to white, and the pool with the white fence and white pergola roofing around the deck, they are always hanging out. The only other time is when you get on I-75 or the Turnpike, they seem to accumulate on the car. So during April I try to stay closer to home. They stay in the larvae phase for 120 days, so that is why you'll see them again in September.

Thank you for all the info.

For some insane reason, love bugs are also attracted to carbon monoxide. That may account for their short life spans.
Their main purpose in life is to make people wash their cars.

If you get them on your car wash off ASAP.
