Pest control?

On a new home that will be used as a vacation home only a few months a year do you feel that pest control is needed? I will be getting termite protection but was curious about pests.

Pest control in not required if you don't mind bugs. Sometimes, LARGE bugs.

My guess is that if you don't use a service, the bugs that flee from your neighbor's yard will be delighted to find yours!:yuck:

We are snowbirds and contracted for a one-time grand sweep of the property for fertilizing and for pest control. On the advice of our yard man we then added quarterly applications of each to the contract. The service rep started to go on and on to try to upsell us to a platinum plan, but we stood firm and explained that he could write the contract or not - there are lots of providers in the area - he wrote it as we wanted. And the man who weeds and whatever around our home says the property looks great.

And if you do not mind bugs, think about lots and lots

of them.

The only time it MIGHT be an option is if you do it yourself....but you do need pest prevention.

It is my understanding that pest control is for the inside of the house. They spray all around the base boards and put dabs of pest killing goo in and around the kitchen and bathroom cabinets where the water would be. Some of the pest control people take off certain outlets and spray stuff in there. They also spray around the inside garage area, the lanai and around the perimeter of the house.

I find lots of palmetto bugs in the legs up position on the lanai and the front porch area. The other day I found a live one inside which I dispatched and called Terminex and they came out and sprayed again.

The lawn guy is only concerned with the lawn area and what bugs are out there.

You want to be sure to have the inside pest control guys do their thing.

Most pest control companies don't want to do anything inside your house unless absolutely necessary (and it usually is not). They use perimeter protection to keep the bugs out and it seems to work quite well. I would definitely have at least quarterly insect protection applied around the outside on the home - whether you are present or not.

I have a quarterly pest control application on the exterior of my home to keep all the unwanted visitors out. In the two years I've lived here there have been no problems. I don't want and have not needed any interior application. I also have a service that sprays my shrubs so the aphids, thrips, white flies, etc. don't attract other insects.

If you don't have a service while you're not in residence, you'll certainly need one when you come back.
