What kind of animal did this?

Riding my bike this morning I took a detour on a side road in Duval to avoid some traffic. I noticed something that looked like a dead small animal towards the bottom of a driveway. As I got closer I saw it was the head of a rabbit totally intact just no body. No blood,no signs of a struggle. Just a head. Like it was almost left intentionally. Really creepy.
I haven't heard of any coyote sightings lately. Anyone have an idea of what might have done this.?

Perhaps it was a sign similar to a horse head in bed, but on a smaller scale???

I'm just glad it wasn't in my driveway!

Maybe some man looking for rabbit stew who tossed the head before carrying off the carcass? I have seen half a rabbit in Lynnhaven but it was quite bloody at one end. And we supposedly had a bobcat around here hunting things.

Maybe it was a nocturnal bird of prey.

We had a Coyote run through the back of our yard on Glenview GC just yesterday. He stood on a hill looking down at a pond and I could hear the ducks going crazy. He then took off across the course.

We also have feral cats. Once in a great while I will see a large ginger tom disappearing through my yard onto the course. From time to time we see rabbits playing in the strip between our homes and the course, but they do not last too long!

Ninja Bobcat !

It could of been a Hawk. I had one not long ago in my backyard tear apart a Dove until there wasn't anything left. Maybe a rabbit and the head is too hard to rip up with it's claws.

Saw the same thing on my front lawn last year. Think it was the work of a hawk not a coyote as it appeared in midday when coyotes are not around.

I hope you disposed of it before someone thought it was a lawn ornament.

What type of animal?

Obviously, not one that was looking to...get ahead.

:D

SFSkol 05-25-2017 10:46 AM

It was probably looking for its foot.

A hare-razing experience, no doubt.

Hawks, owls etc. do this. One got my daughter's pet rabbit and it was like what you describe. An owl was the culprit. They put their talons through the creature and drop it, sometimes repeatedly.
