tile shower advice
 

We have purchased a new home with a walk in tile shower which we have never had before. Prior to using this is there anything we should know regarding possibly pre-treating or what to clean with and how often. We would not want to see a build up of soap scum and or mold or would not want to damage the tile or grout. Having never cleaned a tile shower we're not sure what to do. Thanks for any advice.

My experience with a product sold at Ace Hardware called Mold Armor has been excellent. I use it sparingly when a gray shadow appears in the bottom corners. It instantly removes the problem, very happy with it.

We had one up north for eleven years. My wife used Method shower spray frequently, once or twice a week. We never had any problems. You want to have the vent fan run for twenty minutes after showers to make sure the excess moisture is removed.

I second it for Mold Armor, one is a cleaner and one is a sealer. Really keeps it looking nice.

When I had some grout repaired, I was told to put 1/2-1/2 water/bleach solution in a spray bottle and spray everything once a week. Wait about 20 minutes then rinse.

Years ago, while living in another state, my husband and I had a bathroom retiled when we bought an older home. The tile guy who did the work told us that if we used a squeegee to clear off excess water every single time we showered, and followed that up with wiping the shower walls and floor with an old towel, the grout color would stay true, and both the tile and the grout would be very easy to clean and maintain. We've followed that practice (yes, it's a pain sometimes) with every house we owned after that, and boy, he was right.

Absolutely. Been here 16 years, very large walk-in shower and that is all we do. Squeegee & towel... Looks new. If corners near floor look dark, just a little bleach & water takes care of it. Another trick I learned and I use it in guest bath.... wipe the tile with a rag and lemon oil, wipe off excess and just towel dry each time you use it. It has remained spotless also.

I have been told that using liquid body wash instead of bar soap keeps you from having a soap scum. Works for us!
