Republican Lawmaker to Teachers: If You Want a Better Life, Get a Second Job
Hmmm....teachers unions weighing down American education? I think not. My wife, an Public School elementary teacher for 38 years was revered by the parents in the school district, most of whom requested her for the younger siblings of children that she had already taught. If you think that teachers are overpaid, think again. They are ONLY paid for the days they teach: 180 days. So, let's do a mathematical experiment; If you pay a teacher what you would pay your babysitter......let's say $5.00/hr.
The teacher now has 30 children for 6 hours per day: so 30 Children X $5.00/hour X 6 hours/day X 180 Day=$162,000.00. Most elementary teachers will start their careers at $25,000 and will end about $80,000. Not nearly what you would pay a babysitter.....but teachers need a college education, certifications, most actually contribute their own money to buy supplies......and the reason your child is NOT getting a good education, is because YOU think that teachers are getting paid too much, and you don't want to pay taxes to pay for their salaries. Did you also know that teachers in over 30 states will NEVER get Social Security after they retire? and they will not be eligible for their portion of their spouse's social security either. So, why do we have legislators who feel this way?.."Republican Lawmaker to Teachers: If You Want a Better Life, Get a Second Job 404 - Error: 404 Most of my teacher friends DO GET A SECOND JOB just to survive...... |
180 days isn't even half the year. It's a "part time" job. at $80,000 a year it works out to $77 an hour. At $60,000 it's still $58 an hour. Most people work for a lot less than that.

Your wife and her teacher friends are overpaid baby sitters. They no longer educate - that has been delegated to the parent thru "home links". The teachers do all the fun stuff with the kids (raise baby chick's, coloring, watch movies, play games, etc.) and the parent get to spend the evening after work teaching the kids thru the "home links".
The teachers unions in those 30 states opted their members out of social security. The union thought they could do better with investing that money for their members, if that don't work out- go whine to the union! My kid's kindergarten teacher made $58,000 a year (public school!), and that was back in 1997... If your wife is still teaching, tell her to get a job in the LRC. She will get the same pay per hour plus she can double dip by picking up a couple hours of "substitute teaching" a day, while she is on the LRC clock... Yeah I really feel sorry for those poor world traveling teachers...only 180 days a year to try to brainwash and assemble a liberal army! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk |

How many lesson plans do soldiers prepare? How many times do soldiers dig into their own pockets to pay for things that the armed forces don't provide? This is only a partial list, but bringing up a different occupation in this thread is pretty lame. |

Connecticut $42,924 District of Columbia* $51,539 Delaware $39,338 Federal Education Association $45,751" "For example, preschool, primary, secondary, and special education teachers earn an average of $54,740 per year. If we drop the preschool teachers, salaries rise even more. Elementary and middle school teachers average $56,420 per year and secondary (high school) teachers earn an average of $58,170.Aug 7, 2014" average starting teacher salary - Google Search What a whole 8 hours? |

Developing lesson plans Correcting/grading papers Developing IEP's for students that THEY have identified as having learning problems. Conferencing with parents until late evenings Maintaining their certifications with unpaid CE courses and hours. and the list goes on.... so the $25,000/year teacher who spends 10 hours per day over 180 days at school (not to mention weekends doing planning) would make (according to your calculations) $13.89/hr, a $35,000/year teacher:$19.44/hr, a $45,000 teacher: $25.00/hr a $55 teacher:$30,55/hr.etc Teachers pay is slow in rising and dependent upon their education degrees, so to have salaries rise $10,000 their educational needs would be at least Master's degree, and then additional hours usually in 10-hour segments. The education is NOT free, nor are the extra hour segments. College credit hours are on an average $594 per college credit hour. Masters degrees require 30-64 credit hours for a Master's degree. so: $594 X 30 hours= $17,820 for 40 hours= $23,800 for 64 hours=$38, 016 Because teachers cannot go to school full time to achieve their credit hours, those courses must be spread over the course of many years. To obtain 6 credit hours/year is a difficult, but manageable task. 30 hours takes 5 years, 40 hours takes 14 years, and 64 hours takes 22 years. Teachers ARE NOT PART TIME WORKERS. If you work 8 hours/day and your work year is 250 days you work 2,000 hours. At a minimum a teacher is on-site for 10 hours/day but brings home work and works weekends, so the 12-hour day is common. 12 hours/day X 180 days=2160 hours. |

What $25,000 a year teacher? This is what they START at: "State Avg. Starting Salary Connecticut $42,924 District of Columbia* $51,539 Delaware $39,338 Federal Education Association $45,751" "Elementary and middle school teachers average $56,420 per year and secondary (high school) teachers earn an average of $58,170" At $55,000 it's really $38 an hour. NO teacher is at work 12 hours every day. They may work late a few days here and there, but not as much as is claimed. They're NOT updating their lesson plan, grading papers, planning for tomorrow...EVERY day. I know teachers too...if they were overworked and stressing...it's usually because they were in a sh!tty school with lots of minority students. The teachers in GOOD...white...schools...were extremely happy with their career choice. |
