'Merica
How do you feel about the use of the "word" 'Merica?
I received an email from a business with this subject: "Happy Independence Day 'Merica..... Am I just too old and out of step to think we deserve the respect of using the full word America? At least they got Independence Day correct! ;) |

I go on record as liking things according to the old rules. Like the old way to write wedding invitations and shaking hands with a firm grasp and standing up to show respect. . |
I can see it happening in people's speech (I wish I could STOP saying "gonna"), but it seems somehow disrespectful seeing it in print, as if the writer is intentionally trivializing the word, so therefore the country. I may be over reacting...

Not crazy about it. It's like when people write X-Mas for Christmas. Some words just shouldn't be shortened.
"Gonna" is okay with me. :D |
Urban Dictionary: merica
It seems to have some baggage with it. Of course, most people do not use a word after looking up in the dictionary as to what it means to Urban Dictionary. |
IMHO it's disrespectful and I do not like it. I think it sounds a bit like a put down of a Hispanic accent. And, I suppose it is just another "modernization" of this age we live in ................... but, it will always be AMERICA to me!
When I think of America, I think of a news reel I saw a million years ago, of a ship filled with Jewish survivors coming to America from the Holocaust .... it will forever be burned in my memory. "Yea, and I do say gonna". |
Merica or Murica. Some say it's patriotic....some say it's redneck.
Here is a patriotic depiction: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1a738baa60.jpg Sent from my VS995 using Tapatalk |
I seem to associate it with country music for some reason? TOP 100 Country Songs 2017 - BEST Country Music Songs

It's actually from a Saturday Night Live skit starring Will Ferrell parodyingPresident G.W. Bush's Texas drawl. Right along with "nucluer"

I take the wrong route when typing or speaking but certain things should not be abbreviated or need to be looked up in the Urban Dictionary by a 60 year old. Don't mess with America, Christmas amongst others. I cringed when President Bush said Nuclear but from where he is from that's the way its said.
njbchbum I would sent that email back to the sender lickety split if not sooner. I'm sure you probably already have. :bigbow: |
I too, will stick with America.
From Dictionary.com. Word origin: from Americus, Latin form of Amerigo; after Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian navigator and explorer who explored the New World. |
