Brown, brown toilet water?

I wonder if any of you have info on this: our realtor mentioned when we bought our 13 yr old resale designer home in Calumet Grove that TV used to plumb houses to use non-potable water for toilets as a conservation measure.
When we moved in after about a month of the house sitting empty both toilets had brown sedimentary toilet water in their bowls--about the color of very strong tea.
I thought the bowls were stained from the awful looking water, it was that bad, but it did clean up. I contacted the water dept but the representative there knew anything about it, she had not worked here that long ago.
Since then it happened again when we were gone 3 weeks. DUH> Whazzup???

Our homewatch flushed and cleaned once a week for that reason.

If I were you I would call the water department back and speak with someone who has the experience to answer your questions.

I don't live in Calumet Grove, but I always understood that the homes north of 466 have one source of water - potable water - for both in-house use and lawn sprinklers. In other words, non-potable water for the toilets doesn't make any sense.

Does you water bill show both potable and non-potable? Mine does.

Does your house have a water softener system? I was watching a house for a friend on a long trip and when I flushed the toilets after two weeks the water was brownish. He said it had something to do with the water softener.

And then again, there's the obvious reason for brown toilet water......:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Have a Nova water system installed. Good price for good water.

If you are asking if the homes have non potable water try:

If your home has non potable water you should have two water turn offs plus the aggregation turn off.

non potable water should be about the same quality as your drinking water so I do not think you should be getting brown stains from it.

Turn off the water to your home and see if the toilets flush.
