Wildwood still without power, food trashed at Pinellas Plaza

BY STAFF REPORT SEPTEMBER 12, 201716 COMMENTS

The City of Wildwood is still without power.

In addition to misery for residents, the aftermath of Hurricane Irma is taking a toll on business.

Thousands of pounds of food were being trashed this morning at the Winn-Dixie at Pinellas Plaza. The staff indicated that after the power went out, their backup generator ran out of fuel. The store has a relationship with a local food bank that picks up five days a week, but was unable to salvage the food because of the conditions.

City offices are closed.

It is not known when power will be restored.

Unfortunately they will pass along to the consumer

Or the seagulls

Or it is just plain fake news at its finest. In the other paper, there was a comment by someone that they contacted the WD about this and were told that they have generators and did not throw any frozen food away.

I truly hope Wildwood gets power back soon.

Are you insinuating those photos are "fake news" also?

Or do you think they just set them up for a photo shoot???

I would suspect that an operation as large as Winn Dixie purchased insurance coverage for this loss. it is an available additional endorsement in every commercial insurance policy for grocery stores, etc

Not only will they have insurance to cover loss of food items, every day they're closed there is a percentage of their income that the insurance company pays for loss of income. Standard business insurance

It is not fake news. I was at the Winn Dixie at Pinellas Plaza yesterday (Tuesday) and saw for myself. All refrigerated and frozen items were gone. No meat, no deli, no milk, no frozen goods. Perhaps you shop at a different Winn Dixie.

I would take book that WD had backup generators. That is general practice for a supermarket. That said, that doesn't mean the backup system worked.

If you read the article that OP posted - yes - but they ran out of fuel...

xcaligirl 09-13-2017 10:36 AM

Seems like someone didn't check the fuel level in the generator....

Why is everyone worried about WD and fake news. How is Wildwood doing? Are the residents still without power?

All it takes is 5 seconds for a 3 phase refrigeration compressor motor to fail while being single phased. Backup generators won't help.
