Facebook Won’t Reveal if Russia Targeted You During the Election
 

Facebook refused to commit to releasing the Kremlin-backed propaganda it uncovered. Users may never know if they were targeted during the election—or are still being targeted now. The social media giant declined to commit to releasing information about Russian government-backed Facebook posts, groups, and paid advertisements to the users who encountered them. Facebook groups emanating from the St. Petersburg-based operation were outed by an investigation in the Russian magazine RBC in March.

The ability of foreign nations to use social media to manipulate and influence elections and policy is increasingly seen as the soft underbelly of international espionage because it doesn’t involve the theft of state secrets and the U.S. doesn’t have a ready defense to prevent such attacks.

In recent weeks, social media’s role in disseminating false information or inflaming public opinion has become a prime focus of the Senate and House intelligence committees, which are conducting separate probes into Russia’s influence on the election as well as whether President Donald Trump’s campaign or associates colluded with the Kremlin.
