How to cool down my garage a bit.
 

I have a recently built home, the garage faces south of west and gets direct sun for most of the day. Insulation is whatever TV put into new builds this year. I had a attic fan installed with air vents in the ceiling and garage doors to pull fresh air through the garage but that only helps in the evening and night when the air is cooler. What should I do up there to get the temp. in the garage down a bit?

I put a radiant barrier on my garage doors and it dropped the temp by about 20 degrees in the garage. I bought a couple of rolls of the thin radiant barrier at home depot along with a couple of rolls of 3m double sided tape, cut the barrier to fit inside the panels, around the air vents and around the windows, applied the tape, and BOOM, a cooler garage. My garage faces due west.

My garage has overhead door windows, insulation, roof radiant barrier and faces southwest. If I keep the overhead doors closed the garage will never exceed the outdoor temperature. Most days it remains a few degrees below ambient. In my instance installing vents and exhaust fan would increase the temperature & humidity inside the garage. Since I keep my classic car and pickup truck inside the garage it rarely gets opened.
My garage has never exceeded 95 degrees !

Is it possible to mount a window air conditioner in the garage attic. My thinking is it would not be seen as it would be in the attic and the heat from it would be taken out by the power attic vent, the drain can run down into the main air conditioner drain, and the cold air can be forced down into the garage via a rectangular vent. I don't think this would be in violation of anything as it would run off the attic 110 receptacle, and would not be seen or heard outside of the garage attic. That combined with door insulation and more attic insulation might work. Any thoughts on this, positive or negative?

I put up radiant barrier on the entire roof and insulated the garage ceiling and doors. Since doing this the temperature is cooler than the outside temperature and can actually use the garage for other than storage.

There is no insulation in the ceiling of the garage and the attic can be 150F or more so a must to insulate the ceiling. The radiant barrier dropped the temperature in the attic by 40 to 50F.

The a/c would be using attic air across it's condenser along with the added heat of the condenser discharge. You would be lucky to get a 60 degree supply discharge and the longer it ran the worse it would get. Eventually the compressor would trip off it's thermal overload.
Would not work well.
A Mitsubishi split is what you need.

In our west facing designer home we had a 2 ton Mitsubishi mini split installed (in a 800 sf garage). It removes the humidity and keeps it comfortable even on the lowest fan setting. Only takes minutes to cool down the 3 car area. Not cheap - little over $5K, but I'd do it again. Its worth it to me.

Before installing the unit, we had Romac install their garage door insulation kit, had the door windows tinted and would keep the pull down attic door propped open with the window open - it helped some.

Just had our lanai enclosed and had the same mini split unit installed there too.

Talk to the folks at Solar Guys...they have a couple of options which have made a big difference in our garage.

Listen to the people who say these things work.

I can't tell much difference. It is really hot in there in the summer. We have insulated garage doors and we are east facing. HOT...I say.

I was thinking of leaving a car in my garage while gone from April to November, snowbirds season. I'm concerned about heat in garage. Any snowbirds leave a car while gone?

My snowbird neighbor does, and it is a gorgeous Corvette. He wouldn't do that if it wasn't safe.

Re: leaving the attic door propped open ~ We do that too, but please be aware it is technically a fire hazard. You're essentially creating a chimney, which would dramatically increase fire spreading.

That said, obviously we consider it a minor threat. :boxing2:

I have the laundry in a full 3 car garage that faces East. I live in a grove of large Oak trees that provide lots of shade. Cool in the morning. But it gets very hot during the day. When I moved here full time I wanted to get it air conditioned. I tried to get quotes from 3 different AC people. They all said that it was against code and wouldn't bid on it.

Tried the propped attic door. No help. Next I Installed some real nice motorized garage door screens and tried fans to exhaust the heat. No significant temperature drop.

Next I insulated my attic and garage doors. Got a few degrees temperature drop. My guess is less than 10 degrees lower. Still very hot in the afternoons.

Finally, the code changed this year. They now allow AC to be put in garage, but they call them "dehumidifier" instead of air-conditioning. Works for me. Now I am very happy! The space is usable all day long.

I put a 2 ton Mitsubishi mini-split in the 32' x 32' garage. $5K. Love it!

You mileage may vary.

Mitsubishi mini split also makes a multi zone unit. Is it possible to use one of these for garage & enclosed lanai? One outside device and two inside units.
