Drone Club

Is there a drone club in The Villages? If so, where and when do they meet?

You might want to checkout the new club: HandsOnTech.org

They will be meeting weekly.

Perhaps it's time we start one, I'm interested.

The E-Flyers fly at the polo field on weekday mornings. Many of them have drones and use a portion of the field a bit away from the r/c planes. Might want to check them out!

What are the laws regarding flying a drone in a residential area like The Villages, far from any airport?

It is considered as class G air space and not prohibited by the FAA. There are however areas that would be prohibited by 14CFR107 such as over the town squares when people are gathered there. There are also rules with respect to prohibited uses and observations/capturing of images/video but most of these apply to law enforcement and not recreational flying, contrary to what some on this site might think and try to quote out of context.

Bottom line is yes it is allowed and there is a lot of incredible scenery to be seen and photographed in the Villages from the air.
And to the naysayers nobody is intruding your privacy from 100 feet or higher, most drones don’t have zoom lenses so anyone and most details are but a few pixels on the image that can’t be enlarged and enhanced regardless of what you see on television shows. If the drone is moving the pilot isn’t looking down, they’re looking in the direction of travel.
