Rat In Largo
 

My neighbor just killed a large rat that was under a bush outside my front door. It was huge!! Has anyone else in this neighborhood or close by have any problems with rats?

I would be willing to bet an ice cold Yeungling it was more like a Marsh Rat (not vermin) or even a squirrel than a Norway Rat. Picture?

I'm not sure what you consider a "Marsh Rat." Perhaps you can provide some details. Are you referring to a Nutria? They are a non-native species that is not wide spread through Florida.

They can get up to 14 pounds.

Oh, here is some interesting news. A year-old report in an Orlando news magazine reports that Florida is experiencing another invasive species. The Capybara, the largest living rodent in the world, is now living and breeding in Northern Florida.

The Capybara can grow to be between 77 and 146 pounds. Yep. As large as a big dog.

The Fish and Wildlife agency requests that all Capabara sightings be reported to them.

Holy moly . . . 14 lbs. 77-146 pounds. :22yikes: Maybe I should stay in Chicago. Our rats are usually under 10 lbs.

Everything loves Florida and like us, once here they tend to want to stay. So far, it's not an issue. I'm more afraid of those giant monitors that run around Cape Coral every so often but then, even up north there were things. If prone to paranoia, imagination can run wild. Now and then you will glimpse something hopefully at a distance with an eeeek but 99% of the time, it's 'wow' look at that!

because i live in a cyv with walls six months ago i bought a small boa. haven't seen a rat since but man that snake's grown!.....

Although I might dispute your estimate of the size of Chicago rats, I would certainly agree that Chicago has an incredible number of rats.

As part of my assignment to security for the Democratic National Convention of 1968, I surveyed underground tunnels, passages, and electrical conduits beneath the City of Chicago. Generally, the best access was through subterranean passages in the basements and sub-basements of downtown restaurants.

The rats were plentiful and not particularly shy. They were also quite large. Extermination efforts were ineffective back then, and apparently that has not changed. A browser search about Chicago rats indicates an epidemic of rats persists.

My friend there are only four type of rats I fear big, little, alive, dead. so this is no joking matter for me

and when you use the adjective "large" to me it means any rat.

My friend rats live within 100 square yards of an area they forge. if one was found there are others. Get a bait box from your pest guy to thin out the herd.

I had activity for period but all has been quiet on the western front as late but they are persistent critters.

RATS! I ate dinner at Arnold Palmer last Tuesday on the rear patio with 40 other people. As we were finishing our dinner, a rat come out of the bushes and ran around the tables. Needless to say, most of us freaked out. After trying to shoo it away, two more Rats joined the party. What a great dining experience for $75. I understand rats have to eat too, but pick a less pricey restaurant. When I finally got an audience with the manager the next day, he informed me that they were trying to do everything to get rid of them.....Really? He also said , there are no rats inside. Sooo why have the patio open if you can't control the "critter" population. The manager didn't even say Sorry. Just saying.....
