Actually my neighbors are quite smart, successful and wealthy. The family is only there part time as it is their second or possibly third home and happens to be worth north of $5M. They had purchased the home maybe a couple months before and had not yet upgraded the existing security system. It had some older low resolution outdoor cameras and an alarm which did go off but the police did not arrive in time to capture the burglars who were "pros". My neighbors of course have since totally upgraded their entire security system. BTW, this particular gang had successfully hit several houses in the area over a period of time.
Lots of teardown/construction is going on here and that inevitably brings burglaries and other crimes to a good neighborhood. (My shack is nothing like my neighbors home. Mine is a future teardown. lol). It is somewhat analagous here to what is going on in the Historic Area of TV which I am happy to see happen as I find that area breathtakingly beautiful.
To my neighbors the $200K is literally chicken feed which they shrugged off as such. It is the loss of sentimental value they grieve.
This did not occur in TV, but in CDM, CA.
My point of course is that burglaries happen all over nowadays and one is wise to protect oneself and one's property as best they can. Consider what it could be like if someone broke in and stole checks from the back of your checkbook and enough personal records to obtain credit cards, loans and social security or retirement payments.
