B-12 deficiency....shots and supplements?

Looking for experience with B-12 supplements.

Seems like there is such a wide variety of dosages from very small to multiple 1000's mcg.

Most descriptions from google are not very specific and tend to be on the very low side of recommendations.

In addition there is the discussion of whether supplements are effective at all. Our doctor said it can't hurt to take the supplement and could not attest to effectiveness.

My doctor prescribed a daily B-12 supplement and I have done some internet research on it. Vitamin B-12 is one of the "water soluble" vitamins, which means that it is easily dissolved in water and usually any excess is naturally excreted from the body. Instead of the prescription high level B-12 tablets, I now take a Men's 50+ multivitamin, which has 1667% of the recommended daily requirement of B-12, and my most recent blood test showed me within the normal B-12 levels.

Recently medical science has become aware that some people are extremely low in Vitamin D and doctors will prescribe megadoses orally for a LIMITED time.

Self medication is not good in this situation. Blood tests are needed to monitor levels and you can take too much if you are self medicating.

BTK said the doctor told him to take it, so not self medicating.

I'd ask the doctor what dose.

Do we all remember when eggs were no good? Last time I looked, the same eggs are now good for you. I've seen the same thing regarding coconut. Sadly, the information we have is based on who has paid for the study

Your body need vitamins in balance. Taking a large dose of one can actually cause a deficiency of another.

A vitamin D deficiency was mentioned. Your body makes vitamine D with the aid of sunlight. This is Florida, we all get plenty of Sunlight.

Ginko Biloba was touted for Demetria. One of my friends fathers took so much of it that he ended up in the hospital.

I do take vitamins. Does it help? BEATS ME..

I had brought up mega doses. I will try to find some information so my post seems clearer. Mega doses must be carefully monitored. They are 50,000 units.

I have no medical education.

My doctor did a series of blood tests to check my vitamin levels. I was very low on many of them and now take B-12 shots and several other vitamins that I am deficient.
