Wild Pigs

A person told the on-line news that wild pigs were rooting around in his yard in Belvedere. He was naturally upset and he talked of shooting or trapping the pigs. Comments were mostly the John Wayne wannabees who expressed glee in shooting the pigs for fun and food.

However, shooting a gun in the boundaries of The Villages is illegal. Just imagine driving in your golf cart and some bozo is in his front yard shooting at a pig!

The trapping on your property is legal but then you have an angry wild pig trapped. You cannot legally shoot it and certainly cannot release it.

If you did kill and butcher the pig - which is doubtful - the meat of wild pigs almost certainly contains the trichinosis worm cysts. Yum!

Dig a big hole in the yard, cover it with some camouflage and bait, when the pig falls in the hole toss in some lime and fill it back in, problem solved.

Meat Industry Turns Florida's Feral Hogs Into Prime Pork : NPR

Found this but not sure how it would apply to the feral pigs in Belvedere. Maybe the Morses should look into it.

good point Imo, The Villages is not even a municipality. I think the rules are by town and County and then by lot size.

Probably City and County Ordinances.

Municode Library

Like Lady Lake's Sec. 2-200.17. - Pets, animals, and wildlife.

And there is some Statute about firing a gun over public roads. Statutes & Constitution

I love the taste of feral pig meat. I hope the homeowner can kill and eat a few!

Here is an article on how to butcher them. How to Break Down a Wild Pig | Realtree

I do hear local farmers shooting at something once in a while with what sounds like a rifle. And at times like a shotgun. Maybe one less coyote to worry about.

Ok, this is probably a pretty stupid idea, but ....
I read that wild pigs are pretty smart. So, lay out mouse traps around the yard at night so when they get close they snap shut and startle them. If it snaps over their foot (hoof?) it probably would sting a bit and maybe make them head to greener pastures? Or annoy the heck out of the neighbors and lie in wait for them at night and throw firecrackers at them like you do to make sure geese don’t nest in your back yard.

Course, you can also hire a trapper: http://animaltrappersinorlando.com/hog/

???

Just some ideas.

There must be grubs or some other critter under the grass, get rid of the food source and you get rid of the pigs
