Question on Testing New Land Purchase
 
Curious what was the land used for before the developer bought it? Particularly interested in the southern areas (Fenney).

Does anyone know if the developer did any testing for sinkholes on the land before purchasing?

I'm presently reading a book (Coconut Cowboy) by a Florida writer Tim Dorsey. One of the characters tests land for sinkholes; got me wondering.

In most cases no. It is generally not required by building codes, and most building contractors do not provide testing on private home sites because of the additional expense. In some cases public building construction sites in sinkhole areas may be tested and reinforced as needed for safety and liability reasons. Commercial builders of large structures will do it but it costs 10's of thousands to do correctly and is not always conclusive.

A very intelligent comment in light of all the contaminates/chemicals/pesticides used in the area, particularly by those who live in The Villages.

The use of these kind of things is rampant and chemicals have a residual value and leach into the ground and ground water. No, we won't be around to see the results of all this misuse but our grandchildren and all future generations will be here to live with the destructive results.

Have you used any of the chemicals available today? Round up is useless...the bugs crawl thru modern day bug killer like it is nothing. You have to apply crazy amounts to get results.

We used to be able to buy diazinon concentrate (1 teaspoon for 3 gallons of water) that killed all bugs on contact and lasted about 9 months.

So what's better, 55 gallons of weaker chemicals or a teaspoon of effective chemicals.

The book is fiction. You can Google testing for sinkhole. It can be done. Drilling holes, take samples. Use ground penetrating radar. Maybe they only do it for large projects.

The answer is to use these chemicals when only necessary and not monthly, bi-monthly or with any contract with a pest control company, when in fact, homeowners do not have any problem whatsoever.

Oh, your new to Florida where it's 12 months a year growing season for plants and insects.

Go ahead, do not do any preventive applications. You can pay to have your lawn replaced AFTER the chinch bugs kill it...you can deal with months of roach infestation AFTER you see them running across the ceilings at night ...

I assume you will not give your dog a flea collar, or flea treatment, till after it gets fleas...unlucky dog.

I originally moved to Florida in 1983 so I am far from being a newbie.

The Moderator stated to stick with the topic of sinkholes.
I will only add that judging from your comment, you don't know me and most of what you posted is not true and sinkhole unrelated.
