Birdcage
 

For anyone who doesn't read the pet section, I am going to post here. Does anyone have any grass or stone area inside their birdcage and if so, did you build your birdcage around the bit of grass/stone or did you add grass on top of the cement somehow after the birdcage was there?

I have fake grass in a corner my pool cage. I had the concrete cut out and sand put in under the grass for drainage.

Good idea. Does the fake grass smell?

When we had our birdcage constructed last year, we were told it was required to have a concrete slab. We live between 466 & 466A. Gave up on the "green space for the dog" idea. :shrug:

Was that approved by ARC? I had a neighbor looking at doing that and he told me that it was not allowed.

We have an area cut out of the concrete and "Pinterested" the area with rocks for our dog.

We did two layers, first a larger rock layer, then we overlayed screening (like the screening in the birdcage) on top of the big rocks, then put a layer of small round pebbles (easy on the paws) and added a few smooth colored glass stones (almost like marbles) to jazz it up. Easy cleanup, and occassionally just spray some water on it.

By doing the layers it created a good drainage system. Occassionally we also throw some fabric softener pellets into the rocks to stay ahead of any smells.

It has been there five years, and is within my screen enclosed pool area, (23 years old) and can't be seen by the golfers. It is not in use at this time, but can be cleaned using cleansers, and with proper drainage, no odor. It might help that I had two little Yorkies, at six pounds each.

I had someone tell me that once a birdcage is in, ARC can't do anything about what is inside, only outside so I guess if the birdcage is ARC approved and THEN you take out some concrete, it is "legal". We just may try that! I would think people would rather you have a potty area inside your birdcage than walk the dog because you can't pick up pee if they go on someone else's lawn. I called the ARC office before we installed a Gazebo inside our large birdcage and was told they DO NOT have say over what you can or can't do inside the birdcage.

So this is weird..I called Community Services back again and got a gentleman (Kevin) this time. I asked about having grass or rock inside a birdcage and he said "inside a birdcage is considered inside a house so you can do whatever you want" and I said to clarify I can build a birdcage over a piece of lawn and he said Yes. Wonder why some people are being told no and some are being restricted to how much grass...maybe no one is on the same page there

Suggest you get that in writing!

Lived is Vegas for a time, must people had fake grass, and would use baking soda of it and spray off with water, no smell...

OP, when you submit plans for the approval of your birdcage, clearly show the grass area, same goes for the building permit, these documents once approved will provide your legal stance if there are future complaints or questions.

As for getting different answers, I am guessing there has been misunderstanding between the word 'birdcage' and 'lanai', as these are different structures. Also, I have personal experience with getting the WRONG information from the building department, so this is the reason why I am suggesting that you document your intent of having a grassed area in your BIRDCAGE, so there will be no future questions.
