Comcast modem router questions
 

Help with linksysmodem/router install. Any assistance would be appreciated, tired of comcast rental fee.
Bought new link sys DOESIS 3.0.

I think you need to call Comcast for them to initialize the device on their system.

I suspect that you will need to contact Comcast. It looks like this website is for installing a router after you have the internet modem installed. The first thing that needs to be installed is the modem. You mentioned that you have a combined modem and router. You will need to call Comcast and provide them with a MAC address (should be on the modem/router) and the model number of the device.

When we signed up with Comcast they recommended we purchase our modem. We bought the one they recommended. However, they failed to tell us that if we had a problem with it they couldn't fix it due it not being their rental modem. Therefore, we couldn't get it fixed so had to go to renting theirs. You might ask them about this. Just a suggestion.

To purchase the same modem at Best Buy as the Comcast modem, which includes the landline phone connection, would be about $220. For me, it makes more sense to rent the Comcast modem for about $10 per month. If the modem you own malfunctions, or even if your service fails and Comcast blames it on your modem, how long will it take you to get your service restored? If your modem is under warranty, it may take weeks to enforce the warranty, and you will be out of service.

This isn't going to address the OPs issue but may be of help for others in making decisions. One of the things I like about CenturyLink via fiber to the house is that they give you an IP address at a RJ-45 jack in the wall. At this point, you can plug in any router (not a modem/router, just a router) or computer and you don't need any assistance from CenturyLink. I understand that you will require their equipment if you have their Prism IPTV service but if you only have internet you can skip their equipment and easily use your own. If you want a "landline", any of the Voice-over-IP phone services will save you money.

Just to further summarize on this....


There are basically four technologies to get internet to your home and examples of each.

Satellite - Direct TV
Cable - Comcast
Phone Lines - Century Link
Cell Towers - Through your phone service provider

In the case of CenturyLink, there are actually two technologies: copper wire "phone lines" (aka DSL) and fiber optic cable to the house.

Wasn't sure it the fiber option was available in The Villages as I haven't seen it here in the Historic Section. Is it, anywhere in the Villages?

I believe everything below 466a and other selected areas in The Villages has fiber to the house. I live down near Brownwood.
