Wagering

Does everyone know there is a "push" by The Village's to stop all wagering in The Villages? This would, in theory cover 50/50's, Bunco,Poker, MarJong, Golf, etc.
One of the statements made by The Villages as a possible policy is, "...Please keep in mind the District may be more restrictive and prohibitive in what is allowed under Florida laws, prohibit any gambling all together in our facilities..."This would in effect involve thousands of residents who enjoy these games. We have not seen any references to this possible impact on the community in any of the publications and wondered how many TOTV's were aware this is going on?

If you think there was a lot of noise about the 8 PM crack-down on outdoor music, you ain't seen nothing yet! The game players would blow whomever is responsible for this alleged proposed change totally out of the area! Don't you dare mess with those BUNCO players.

Can you imagine the Card Police marching into a rec. center and trying to confiscate those $10 jackpots? They wouldn't survive with their fingers intact. Just another irresponsible remark by someone who dfn8tly did not engage their brain.

Sumter County has laws on the books. The Sheriff of Sumter County enforces those laws.

I don't think the districts can allow any form of gambling. They would be complicit and this is not the time they want such an image. The IRS is looking in their direction.

It would not surprise me in the slightest if we heard of Sheriff's officers stopping wagering of even the smallest sort.

The Great Fumar 11-22-2009 08:23 PM

WELL , If they did, it would really surprise me , I think its just another postition of THE VILLAGES saying " I WASH MY HANDS OF THE WHOLE THING "........
Nickle and dime gin rummy games are not their target........

I'D BET ON IT !!!!

Something like this came up a over a year ago. The Rec Department did a lot of research and even offered briefings on "gambling" to those responsible for some games. If I remember correctly, Florida law allows "social gambling" where no prize or pot is over $100. The Rec Department urged all game managers (whatever you call the person who schedules a poker, cribbage, etc. game) to comply with the law. It seems some of the larger Bunco games were getting over the $100 per prize limit and that was the basis of somebody's complaint. If we can't even get a Guest ID System in place that the majority of residents want, how will they ever get a "Stop Gambling System" in place since most of the residents don't want that at all? I watch the AAC minutes and have not seen anything on "gambling" on any of their meeting agendas or minutes.

I don't know or care about the card games, but I do know that as long as golf is being played "THERE WILL BE GAMBLING "

The people in charge should leave people alone

I should have clarified that the statement;"...Please keep in mind the District may be more restrictive and prohibitive in what is allowed under Florida laws, prohibit any gambling all together in our facilities..." was from John Rohan who is in charge of all Rec Centers and not a rumor started by someone.
