outside tv antenna
 

Omne makes a tv antenna that looks like a frisbee and weights less then 2 pounds.

I'm wondering if I mounted it on the plastic pipe that is the water systems vent and snaked the cable down the vent to a hole I drill into the pipe if it would be easier and just as safe as any other way. I could caulk around the hole in the plastic vent.

I think my vent is near all the cables that go to the tv's too.

Since I have never seen anyone do it this way so I'm guessing there must be a reason.

Sewer vents are hard to fix if you screw it up. They are also either straight above a bathroom (and not near a tv) or they run around your attic (and difficult to snake cable thru). Also, it is against code.

If your garage is pointed toward Orlando, it is pretty easy to put it on the eave of the house and run the cable in thru the soffit and into the garage attic. From there, you can snake it down the conduit to the TV/ phone/ water controller box in the garage. Then add an amplifier, and then send it to your tv thru the usual wire.

I would try it out first by running a real long cable thru a door to your tv to make sure that you get anything anyway.

thank-you---if and when I add an outdoor antenna I will follow your advice. I knew there was a good reason not to monkey with the vent.

I haven't had cable tv for years. I was content with netflix for entertainment and youtube I use mostly for news. I jist added direct tv for $10/ month for the next 3 months. cancel at anytime A sale is going on. I won't get an antenna for 3 months.

I just have an indoor Moku amplified antenna in my window. It gets me 4-6 channels. That plus streaming suits me.

I have a Lava HD8008 omni-directional antenna, fits the description given by the OP. Installed it in attic above the garage. when it worked, we could get 45-50 channels, but it turned out we could not get reception about 1/3 of the time. I believe it would work better if we could have placed it just inside our gable at S or E end. However my front gable faces W, and too much trouble for me to get to my back, east, gable. I then purchased an RCA directional antenna from Walmart, rated at 70 miles, installed it in attic, pointed about 112 degrees (toward Orlando), and it works great.
I paid $80 at Amazon for the Lava HD8008, and I would let it go for $50. As I alluded, I think it would work either outside, or in a gable facing S or E. Message me if interested.

I'm so ready to cut the cable, I may have alluded to the fact that comcast is NOT on my top 10 list. With all the interest in cutting the cable, I would think there is someone interested in making this a reality and opening a business.

Take a look at antenna direct. We are in Santiago with a field toward Orlando. Clamped it to a stepladder and got 45-50 stations. Some repeats, some Spanish.

Those are usually OMNI-directional. You need an antenna that is "focused" in the proper direction. Sometimes call a YAGI. Usually you wil get much higher gain that wayfrom where you want to get the signal (south) as it all is "concentrated" in the direction you need rather than 360 degrees around you. If you look at roofs around here 99% of the antennae are yagi (directional) types. If you search this forum there are probably 90 other threads with the same question and lots of information.

Just to clarify for those who might not understand. That isn't DirecTV as most people know it (satellite dish etc) it's "DirecTV Now" which is an internet streaming service. By the way they have another deal going. Buy 3 months for $35/month and get an Apple TV 4K box for free (worth around $170).
