Garbage Disposal
 

Looking for a handyman to replace my garbage disposal. Any recommendations.

Call the plumber who did the original installation.. Listed on the electrical panel.

Our disposal went out two weeks ago. We called Mike Scott Plumbing, they weren't able to schedule us for 7 days. They had a flat rate of $100 for the Badger 5 and $135 for install. Then I called Kiley & Sons, who we have used before, and they were able to schedule us in two days. They also stock the Badger 5 for $100 and charge by the hour. The plumber was done in about 35 minutes and the charge was $100 + $105 = $205. I said, I still have the whole hour, and he said yes, so I had him fix a toilet that needed a gasket. There was no extra charge since he was done in under an hour and added $11 for that part.

I had checked Lowes website and they have the Badger 5 for $99, if you're a veteran you'll save $10 but then you'll pay tax, so I just had Kiley & Sons install one of theirs.

We use Broward Factory Service that warranties all appliances. Several months ago they replaced ours for 0.

Disposal
 

Ours went out a few months ago. It plugged into a receptacle under the sink ( no wiring involved ) so I bought one at Lowes and replaced it myself. There was really nothing to it. You can find how to videos on youtube.

I have found they freeze up once in a while if not lubricated. A special Allen head type wrench can be used to free them up. I put a little mineral oil or olive oil in mine about once a month after it froze up on me a couple times.

I run a few ice cubes through it once in a while followed by half a lemon to deodorize it.

Also one might need to push the reset button.

They can be unclogged by pushing down on the impeller with a dowel and rocking it. I don't put artichoke leaves, egg shells and such down one anymore. I learned the hard way! lol

Our street of CYV's is 7 years old, and just about every home has had their disposal quit working in the past year, I think we were the last. So those with new homes, keep 6-7 years in mind. Ours started leaking water out of the bottom is why I changed ours out, the plumber said that hot water will eventually cause them to leak. The new Badger units come with the wrench to loosen the nut on the bottom if necessary. I did look at some videos on Youtube, but figured it was worth $100 to not have to worry about it being right.

They do have an engineered lifetime. I hope you caught it before the leak caused any damage!
