Almost My Worse Day Ever

I need to share this with everyone who has a pet that rides in their golf cart. I have an adorable 12 pound pet dog that loves to ride in the passenger seat of my golf cart. This animal is now family and an important part of our lives. Yesterday, on the way to the mail box I had my pet therapy dog sitting beside me, in the blink of an eye she was snatched from the cart seat and hurled 15 feet backward onto the pavement. somehow she broke loose and ran to an adjacent yard scared to death. My heart stopped as I realized she might be seriously injured. I nearly cried as I found she was virtually uninjured. What happened ??? She has a full harness vest on along with a leash. the leash somehow out the right side of my cart, the rear tire caught the leash and threw her tumbling 15 feet backward at an unbelievable speed. I will ALWAYS have her leash tucked beneath my bottom.

Thank you for posting this. This is a very real danger to our pets. I'm always trying to come up with safer ways to transport my dogs, who also love to ride in the golf cart!

When my parents got their new dog, we got a car harness at Petsmart that included a carabiner that will hook into the back of the cart. I believe the brand is Kurgo.

We already had something similar for my dog, and it’s useful for keeping them on the seat (or in the basket) when a leash requires a lot more attention than a driver can provide.

Another reason pets should not be riding in golf carts. You will now have to get a therapy person for your dog. It's like driving your car with a dog in your lap. Shame on you. Yes, i do love dogs, but i don't make excuses for taking them on planes or into stores where they don't belong. Therapy, really. I feel sorry for all those people who need guide dogs and are legitimate. Glad your dog was not hurt.

I tie my dog's leash to the back of the golf cart.

We do the same. Dogs can ride as safely as humans.

We have a second leash on the golf cart that we attach to our dog's collar. She cannot jump out. Village dogs love golf carts and it can be done safely.

As safely as we all transport our grandchildren of all ages and sizes.

Nothing more complicated that common sense and awareness can't fix.

Doggie Seat Belts

Actually, if your answer to your scary occurrence is sitting on your dogs leash, you learned NOTHING. Your pet needs to be belted in safely and securely. If you have seat belts, you can find a great answer to this problem from Amazon:

Vastar 2 Packs Adjustable Pet Dog Cat Car Seat Belt Safety Leads Vehicle Seatbelt Harness, Made from Nylon Fabric Amazon.com : Vastar 2 Packs Adjustable Pet Dog Cat Car Seat Belt Safety Leads Vehicle Seatbelt Harness, Made from Nylon Fabric : Pet Supplies

If you don't have seat belts in your cart, you need to install a short leash of some kind that is bolted to the cart.

Just saying....

I certainly did learn something. My pet didn't jump out of the cart, wasn't pushed and did not fall out of the cart. It was a matter of the leash being caught by the wheel. If I had been sitting on the leash, this would have never happened.

Glad your dog is ok. Now your “therapy dog” needs a therapy dog.

I had the same thing happen to me. My dog was not hurt either Thank God. I had slowed down to make a turn not paying attention to the leash. I learned my lesson the hard way.
