The Indy 500

While I lost interest in domestic open-wheel racing when the USAC & CART had their big fight (and even after kissing & making up and becoming IRL)...the Indy 500 has always been a must see for me.

I think that probably goes back to one of my best memories with my Dad.

In 1961, at 5 years old, I AND my Dad ended up having the mumps (measles? I can't recall)...at the same time!

So we both laid in bed, listening on the radio to A.J. Foyt... win his first of four (tied for all-time wins) Indianapolis 500's.

And while I like watching NASCAR occasionally, a lot of casual observers don't realize how much more dangerous 'open-wheel'/'open-cockpit' racing can be...compared to series like NASCAR.

I also used to be a huge fan of F-1, the worldwide premier open-wheel racing series, but for years now there's isn't a lot of competition in it...and it's now kinda boring.

In today's race, I'm rooting for either Helio to win his fourth and join the immortal's Foyt/Al Unser Sr./Mears...or for Danica to win her first (and last?).

Regardless, I think the race will once again live up to its billing as... 'The Greatest Spectacle In Racing.' :ho:

Well, it's not gonna be Danica. :(

And...Helio's now out too. :(

The real winner will be those red and white petunias - they're taking a beating in that turn - but always bounce back!

Good one! :1rotfl:

One thing is for sure, this new car...is making for some pretty exciting racing!

It seems that there isn't much warning when the rear starts to go...and it just immediately snaps around. :22yikes:

The closing laps could be very interesting...if there are any cars left. :ohdear:

Pretty amazing race today. I remember my home town boys, the Unser's, racing days there.

Yep.

I never could figure out why the Unser Museum...wasn't on Unser Blvd though. :D

What a race!!

And when you see that three of the four behind him are previous Indy winners (and the other is this years pole winner)...it pretty much says it all. :BigApplause:

Well, you know the turf over there. Unser Blvd is way out on the west side. The museum is within an easily accessible complex of attractive buildings constructed for Maxie Anderson, the balloonist, for his company, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp, in a high end part of town.

Al III sells Corvettes (if you want one they refer you to him) at a local Chevy dealer. I met him when I was shopping for an Australian built SS, not this latest very hot one, but an earlier version now discontinued as they did not sell well.
