Beware of Biting and Stinging Creatures around Polo Field Track.
Took Beau to the Polo Fields Monday and we were near the north gate and Beau suddenly picked up his left rear leg and would not put it down and then it start convulsing.
I picked him up wondering if he had stepped in gum which sometimes gets that re-action. Put him down and he would not put any weight on that leg. My golf car was parking way on the other side of the Polo Field so I carried Beau a little way and then rested. :cryin2: A kind couple came by in their golf cart and wondered what was happening. I mentioned my dog had hurt his leg and they pointed out their tiny Yorkie which they said went into shock the two times it had been stung or bit at the Polo Field and they offered me some kid's Benadryl. Allergy & Itch Relief Medicine for Adults & Children | BENADRYL(R) Various people came by with some concern. I got Beau finally to the golf cart with many stops and worries about his leg. Decided I had better get him to the Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital as quickly as possible. Home It is probably less than a mile from the Polo Fields. We got there and were seen within 30 minutes or so by one of the busy vets. Treated after $300 of work and Beau was walking around Pet Smart while I stopped to finally get a bathroom break of my own. Anyway, if you do take you pet to the Polo Field keep on the pavement and way from the grass on the outside of the Polo Field oval pavement. Beau was probably stung by a bee. Been trying to go a lot of different places here in the Villages with Beau to change up my routine and meet new people and their dogs. The vet Dr. Jason Sexton did a good job with Beau at the Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital and the girls at the front desk were quite friendly. It was an expensive day though. |
Our lab got bitten by something and got a case of hives. Gave her one Benadryl and she went nuts. Dr said that’s common, and you have to give two Benadryl for her not to have the overactive, crazy reaction. Live and learn.
We use Jason Sexton, and like how he interacts with our dog. |

Could have been fire ants too. Everyone needs to be aware of their awful bites that last for up to two weeks and their "gang member tactics". One bites you and tells the rest to pile on. Not nice. |
I know nothing about dog Rx, but please don't use this site as a reliable source for selecting a Benadryl drug dose. Antihistamines can be dangerous in the wrong dose. More is better may be right or may be deadly. Ask your animal professional, the vet, not the groomer, what the correct dose of what med is recommended for your dog if there is need to medicate for an insect bite.

Beau had fun at the Sumter Landing boardwalk today and their Square. I was careful to keep him away from the bees and wasps or whatever they were around the flowers on the Square. We are having fun going to many new places-- at least for Beau-- around the Villages. The dog park Doggie Doo Run Run has become a bit of a bore except for a few days a week that is. Time to change things up. Meet new people and their pets. Good time to check out the three Squares and other places that this place has to offer dogs and their owners. |

I was told our kitten had a heart murmur and should be seen by a veterinary cardiologist. We declined. Bootsie is going strong two years later. But that is another thread. We switched to another vet. No mention of heart murmur. |

Our Bichon Friese 3 years old at the time developed IVDD. No it's not what may have come to your mind. GRIN . It's Invertebrate Disc Disease the animal hospital here in RI said they would not guarantee that surgery would make her free from it for life but at 3 years old in good conscience we could not say NO to surgery we had it done.............$5000 later and 3 years later she's A-OK we do have to watch her from doing the so-called Bichon Blitz too much running could cause a relapse. |
There are ground wasps-sometimes called "cow killers"--they are red & black keep yourself & pets well away from them--it will be the worst sting of your life and most likely fatal to your pet
|
With the intense amounts of rainfall, quite often animals such as ants, bees, wasps, scorpions, etc. are on the move as their communities get flooded or damaged. Plus they are quite agitated and defensively reactive. We always suggest having the nearest emergency vet clinic and routine vet clinic phone numbers and addresses stored in your phone/wallet than having to search for it while critical time for your pet is passing. Fortunately we have a nearby emergency hospital in Buffalo Ridge right in Sumter!

Not sure what stung him. He refused to walk on that leg until after he got out of the Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital. And his back left paw was quite red and twice its normal size. He was not whimpering though. He might have been in shock, however. |

I love my vet at Park Heights in Fruitland Park, and they are out of the bubble and not so astronomical, yet still have the latest equipment. Good warning about Polo Fields, Tal. |
