Must you apply for homestead every year and how?

You must apply for it for the first full calendar year in which you will be a FL resident; application deadline is March 31, I believe. I took the completed form to the tax collector's office up a the sumter annex on 466 and Morse and they processed it. You can probably get the form online or get it there and fill it out.

Once you apply and it is approved, it 'automatically' renews each year. Sumter tax assessor just sent out reminder notice that says unless you tell them otherwise, they assume you still qualify for the homestead exemption.
