Dessert to take to a dinner
 
I have to make a dessert for at least four people to take to British friends' house. Would like it to be something popular in/representative of the US. Pie comes to mind, but I I'm not particularly good at pie crust. Any suggestions?


It will have to stay in a cooler in the car for a couple of hours.

I have a neighbor who makes dump cake and it is always requested at any event she goes to.

Ingredients
1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
1 (15 ounce) can crushed pineapple
1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix

8 ounces chopped walnuts
1/2 cup butter
Directions
In a 9x13 inch pan mix cherries and pineapple. Sprinkle dry cake mix over pineapple, and cherry mixture stir until just combined. Then sprinkle walnuts over top. Drizzle top with melted butter or margarine.
Bake in a 350 degree F (175 degree C) oven for 35 or 40 minutes or until golden brown.

oooo i got carried away and missed that you can't get strawberries----can you get frozen

I like everything. If someone showed up with peaches, blueberries, cooked strawberries, whipped cream and split the little cakes or pound cake everyone could try a little of everything or just their favorite.

Blueberry Short Cut Cake with Strawberry Sauce---Red, White and Blue-----Fresh Blueberries and whip cream layered in a pound cake or on top of sweet rolls [gluten free?]

Don't make the cake from scratch. Go to a bakery and pick out little sweet cakes or a pound cake [maybe gluten free] and just fuss with the fruit and whip cream or buy whip cream. Slice the pound cake in layers and put it together when you get there.

Strawberry Sauce Recipe [i'll bet you can substitute fresh peaches [get the soft ones]

Ingredients
3 cups strawberries, finely chopped
1/2 cup sugar
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Combine the strawberries, sugar, lemon juice and 2 tablespoons water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries break down, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in the vanilla.

Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing against the solids; let cool completely. To store, cover and refrigerate up to 4 days.


or buy frozen in their syrup and use it as a topping.

The dessert would be red, white and blue---

Peaches would work too with the cake and whip cream. What could you sprinkle on top that goes with peaches? raisins, craisons, chopped prunes

Sweet Potato Pie
 
Get the Patty Labell sweet potato pie at Walmart in the bakery section. It's not fancy but it is good. The cobblers are good too!

Buy six peaches. Blanche, peel and cut them up. Add one cup sugar and 1/2 cup flour and two tablespoons butter cut up in little pieces. Place in Allready Pillsbury Pie crust and cover with same. Bake for fifty minutes or until bubbly and golden brown at 350 degrees. Try not to eat it yourself.

Frosty Margarita Pie - No Bake!
 
Frosty Margarita Pie

Crust:
1/2 cup finely chopped strawberries
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs

Filling:
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream (can be sugar free, fat free, or frozen yogurt) softened
1 Tablespoon grated lime peel
1/3 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
2 to 4 Tablespoons tequila, if desired.

Topping:
Whipped cream
Lime and strawberry slices.

In small bowl combine all crust ingredients, mix well. Press in bottom of pie pan (spray lightly with Pam before) or 9 inch baking pan. Place in freezer.

In large bowl with electric mixer, combine all filling ingredients. Mix until just combined. Spoon into crust. Freeze overnight. Cover with foil after frozen. This will not have to be taken out of the freezer before cutting. The tequila prevents it from freezing hard. Serve topped with whipped cream and garnished with thin lime and strawberry slice .

Thank you, everyone. I have not been getting the email alerts to updates on this thread until today. I thought no one was responding! Good ideas. I have until August 10. I like tomwed's idea of buying a cake and fancying up the toppings since there's a heat wave coming. Whatever I bring will have to sit in the car for 1.5 hours while we attend a tour. Cooler and ice packs, of course.

Hmm. There's wonderful pre-made pie crust here. And great peaches. Hmm...


Could I do this in advance and freeze before baking?
