Gas Grill on the Lani
 

I've heard that it is; i) unwise, ii) illeagle, iii)stupid, or all three' to use a gas grill on the lani. What are your thoughts and experiences?

I WOULD GUESS THERE ARE 10,000 GAS GRILLS ON TV lanais.

strongly advised against doing so. I think that's how he talked us into including a summer kitchen in our new house.

And does not your summer kitchen have a gas grill? I can think of only one reason to put the griull outside the lanai and that is if you use it a lot, and cause a lot of smoke, your screens may get dirty faster. But other then that, there is no reason not to have it on the lanai.

It's obviously not illegal.

They build summer kitchens all over TV with an 8 foot ceiling just 4 feet or so above the grill top (and not all have grill vents) so I can't imagine it's stupid or unwise either.

I guess I'd like to move it far enough from the sliders as possible to avoid smoke in the house during windy days but other than that enjoy your grill.

but the grill has a vent hood which serves a couple of functions. It prevents smoke from circulating around the grill which can stain the walls of your lanai, the smoke is funneled to the outside where it will not be blowing in peoples faces, and once smoke circulates on your lanai, over time the smell of smoke starts to permeate the walls, etc. I'm glad I went for the summer kitchen. Everything I read indicates that it adds value to your home.

I had heard to keep the grill outside of your screened area because mice will chew through your screen to get to the grill because they can smell the food. That wasn't a problem for us because we have a pad of cement outside of the lanai for the grill.

The Villages Rental proiperties are not permitted to supply grills. I imagine there had been problems sometime in the past with renters doing things like melting vinyl siding, causing fires or otherwise stinking up the house.

I use a propane grill on the lanai all the time. I keep it away from the vinyl siding and screens when in use, and make sure the wind keeps smoke out of the house. Every once in a while the wind is such that I have to roll the griulle outside the lanai door. Piece of cake!

My rental house had a gas grill. It was in the garage. I don't think it had ever been used. I did not use it.

Flare ups
 

The danger is flare ups from grilling. A gas grill can set the ceiling in fire in a lanai. Not to mention all the smoke. We grill most of the time but we have a concrete pad of the lanai.

A lot of homes (maybe not in TV) even have indoor grills on their gas stoves. I think the flare up, high enough to ignite a ceiling would be a very rare occurrence.

I guess most indoor would have a hood vent though.

TOTV is even better than the old 'party lines', always easy to get a quick answer to a question. Thanks to all, I think I'll enjoy the grill on the lani, except when the wind makes it less than desirable. Thanks to all for the help.

:shrug:We had a grill up north and used it often. Once we had it about 4 feet from the house and the heat melted the siding. this is when we found out that the fire code required grills be at least ten feet from a structure. Maybe you should call the fire Dept. for advice.

I once responded to a fire call for a gas grill fire at a residence. My engine was the 1st on scene and found fire on the back of the house and also in the kitchen. Once the fire was out we found the kitchen cabinets had some damage but the vinyl sided back of the house had extensive damage.

Investigation found that the cause was due to the husband replacing the tank and not reconnecting the hose. Some days later when his wife turned on the tank and then hit the igniter the result was a blowtorch effect on the back outside wall. Unfortunately for the homeowners the grill was on the outside deck about 1' from the house and under the kitchen window, which was open since the weather was nice. End result was maybe $15 - $20K in damages.
