Did your weather radio alarm today?

Several thunderstorm warnings and tornado watch for Lake and Marion County (nothing for Sumter) today .... Thurs, Jan 21st.

My weather radio never sounded an alarm.

I'm pretty sure it is programmed for all 3 local counties.

I remember hearing the test signal yesterday (Wed) so it is communicating.

Funny cause tonight with all of the warnings my radio never went off either. Now i have to check and see why.Its on and you can turn it on by pushing the button but it hasnt come on by itself. So i dont know.

Mine did not go off either. Don't try to fix something that is not broken.

Mine didn't go off either, but I sort of remember that the warning areas are now more specific for location and we weren't near any of those areas that watches and warnings were issued for. This happened after the tornado. If I'm wrong, please correct me on this.

Well if this many people say their radio didnt go off then i bet our radios are all working. So that must mean their is a tower problem somewhere.Did anyones radio go off.

downeaster 01-21-2010 08:00 PM

The newer radios are more refined. I had an older model up until about a month ago and if there were warnings about anywhere north of Polk County all the way to Volusia and Flagler. etc. it would alert us. A real nuisance but better than nothing.

villages07 01-21-2010 08:00 PM

I think we can only program by county. The alerts may be more specific but I believe you'll hear them all for your county. But, I could be wrong.

Anyway, the consensus seems to be that nobody's radio went off. I did a little digging around the internet and found a Weather service phone number where you can report transmitter problems/questions. I just left them a message.

In the meantime..... keep an ear on your TV/Weather Channel. Not sure the radios will be working tonight.

tom60 01-21-2010 08:05 PM

Well they had pleanty of warnings all around us tonight and the weather radios should have gone off.In the past mine always goes off for sumter, lake and marion counties.I bet its a tower problem.

I get weather alerts from WESH TV sent to my computer and didn't get any for Sumter County. My son and his family live in St. John's County closer to Jacksonville and I got alerts for them from WESH. My granddaughter's school didn't release the children because of severe weather. Daughter in law said there was a period of heavy rain and large hail and they lost power in their development. There was tornadic activity in their area also....not sure just how close, but close enough for a warning to be issued. Weather Bug, another weather service I've had for ages, showed alerts for parts of Marion County, but not Sumter.

Not a sound out of my radio. I guess it wasn't my radio that was broken if anything.

The storms have got to reach a certain intensity before the warning signal is sent. Apparently that level was not reached and therefore the National Weather Service had no reason to activate the system. They don't do it on EVERY thunderstorm.

Human nature is funny. We worry when we get a warning and we worry when we don't get a warning.

I would appreciate information on the weather radio.

Where can I buy one? Are there different types? If so, which is best? This is the first I have heard or read about them. Thanks.

TH..... there were severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado watches for Marion and Lake County. Nothing for Sumter county. I (and many others) have our SAME-enabled weather radios set to provide alerts for all 3 counties. IMO, the radios SHOULD have alerted on Thursday and I do plan to followup to determine if there was a problem with the transmitter tower.

What if there had been severe weather coming through in the middle of the night? Groundhog day all over again. Not needless worrying. Hard rain woke me up at 4:30, but, thankfully, no rumbles.

OP...the radios are sold in a number of places. Radio Shack, Walmart, even Publix I believe. Just make sure it is SAME capable...this lets you set which counties for which you wish to receive alerts.
