RIP Neil Simon
 

Neil Simon passed today at 91 years old.

He was an American playwright and screenwriter and the author of numerous Broadway comedies -- probably best known for The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, The Goodbye Girl, Biloxi Blues, They're Playing Our Song, Lost in Yonkers and the Out-of-Towners, as well as many, many others.

During his lifetime he won far too many awards to list such as Emmys. Pulitzers, Writers' Guild, Kennedy Center honors, Golden Globes, etc. etc.

He will be missed by many.

What a very good summary of this man's life. I was saddened to read that this creative genius had passed. He is irreplaceable.

RIP Neil Simon. Over the years, he was probably responsible for entertaining me more than any other person.

I'm saddened this day. Mr.Simon has had a profound effect on my professional comedic writing career. Timeless wit, impeccable timing, memorable characters, ability to make a joke have pathos. Has entertained millions by taking them away from their own worlds and humorously inviting them into his own.

Think I'm gonna watch "Barefoot in the Park" tonight.

As a sidenote, those of you who watched the Match Game back in the 70's probably remember Elaine Joyce.

I didn't know that.

Back in the 90s I attended a writing seminar given by Neil's brother Danny at Duke University. It was great.

Right at the end Neil showed up unexpectedly because his play 'Laughter on the 23rd floor" was test-launching in Durham. He answered questions. He was great.

My screenplay agent at the time told me that Neil assigned all royalties to 'The Odd Couple' to his brother. He said Danny was an inspiration because he would put doilys on his doilys.

Don't know if this is true but it's fun.

Just heard he was the first and only living person to have a Broadway Theater named after them.

I did see a lot of the movies based on his plays.

When a play was having trouble, they brought in Doc Simon to fix the script.

I loved the "Odd Couple" with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. It gave me a lot of laughs. Tony Randall's first choice to play Oscar was...............................
